Bad news for Wolfe lake

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Bad news for Wolfe lake

Post by Jale »

Was away for the weekend on Wolfe lake (westport) with some guys from work to do a little fishing and a lotta unwinding.

Had catches of small walleye and great largemouth/smallmouth action. Beautiful weather but the most disturbing part of the weekend was the sighting of these 4 cormorants.

I didn't think that they had moved to these smaller inland lakes yet but I guess they have and will soon be taking over all our lakes in Eastern Ontario if nothing is done about them.

Pics arn't that good but it was as close to them as they would allow me to get

Were are the cottage owners? I think a discreet 4 bird cull would be fairly simple.

I was out in Windsor this weekend and brought up the Cormorant issue with the locals I was hanging with. None of them realized there was a problem with Cormorants, though they'd "heard something about a protest to protect them". Avid outdoors people may understand the Cormorant issue, but it's surprising how few other people know the destruction of these pests....

You and I think exactly alike Markus. The older fellow I work with mentioned something along that line come fall :D :D

Regardless, that is just a quick band-aid solution for what will become a major problem soon.

Seen a couple on Charleston as well
Maybe they could teach the perigin falcons that are being raised to hunt cormorants.

I've seen a few on the ponds in our gravel pits in Durham region.
They're opportunistic and will spread if left unchecked.

They have been on Charleston for a couple years. They don't seem to get anymore than the handful there is now. I suspect that will be the same scenario on Wolfe. Likely they come from Upper or Big Rideau.

We've only spotted a couple here and there at Wolfe. I noticed a few on Gananoque a couple years back, as well, but don't know if they've picked up there or not?

Careful, jale6666, or I'll have to update your action figure to include a firearm!! The toy factory doesn't appreciate last minute line changes!

Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.
