Clown Show at the Creek - Nov 10th

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Clown Show at the Creek - Nov 10th

Post by Markus »

  Sorry fellas, but we sucked this morning!

RatherBeRigging, Salmon and myself met up for a pre work fish. We were excited about the increased water level, but figured the dirty water would be non productive. Boy were we wrong.

RBR set the hook into our first fish, a shaker, and after a brief struggle, he came unpinned. Then Salmon hooked into a shaker and it came unpinned. Then I hooked into another shaker and it came unpinned!

Finally RBR makes short work of our 4th fish and has a nice shaker landed.

Image

While John is unhooking his fish, I get another fish on....and yes, it comes unpinned. Another shaker. I get reset and I get another hit and I'm into another fish....this ones fighting different....

Image

We had most of the shakers educated at this point. Then RBR gets another tap and reels down to it...sets the hook...surface erruption! Finally a good fish. After a great fight, RBR gets the 10lb+ bow about 20 feet from shore and the 4.5lb leader line snaps. Tough loss RBR, he was a beaut.

So final count at the circus was:

Salmon 0/1

Markus 0/2

RBR 1/3

Clown total 1/7.

Lets do it again next week fellas. That was a fun couple of hours this morning.

RBR, it broke my heart watching you loose that fish this morning. It was awesome watching you do battle with that big boy though. Maybe in the future you'll be better equipt to tangle with him.

I reccomend for the next time you consider bringing the following items:

Rubber Hooks and Whimpy Hooksets!!-LOL

Post by RatherBeRiggin »

Under the big top this morning for sure. Our landed percentage just plain sucked.
I think we certainly had the bait covered and it seemed to be producing big time ....we just couldn't set anything into their yaps but the mesh of the bags-

All in all a great morning ( all types of weather-snow,rain, sun and hail)and it was great to finally get a chance to meet up with Salmon. (great to meet you Simon :D )

We'll get em yet Mark and if the creek stays coloured up the fishing should definitely get better.

By the way good looking bullhead Mark....we seem to have those hooksets mastered.

I'm still shaking about that big coloured up buck rainbow that toyed with me before breaking me off at the hook. (must have been that improved clinch granny knot Mark tied-hehe :P )

Anyway thanks again guys...hopefully our percentage will be a little better next time.

RBR, I forgot to thank you for the coffee this morning. That hit the spot, especially when the 5 minute hail came along.

I just had an unexpected appointment fall in my lap for the am, so I have to push my fishing plans with my father-in-law off til saturday.

However, we will have time for a morning trek. If either you or salmon are free, come on along.

Seriously though guys, thanks for the laughs this morning. I wish I could start the day evryday with a good laugh like that.

Great report Markus! I would never dream of, or have reason to use a 4.5 pound leader in dirty fast water. In low clear conditions alright.

You'll nail them next time! I'll do a few drifts tomorrow and put in a report! :D

I agree TS, we could be getting away with a heavier leader line now that the creeks are dirty, but it is the first time it has been that way.

For the most part I perfer the stealth conditions and it is without a doubt producing more fish than the guys running heavier line. I love the nerve wrecking fight on the light line too and I fully understand that loosing the occasional fish will be the trade off. But he'll be there next time! :P

Right on Markus. I just find with high, dirty, strong water, I have to put the butt to the big ones to turn them from log jams at times. In those conditions I'll run 7 pound Maxima leader material under 8 pound Siglon V.

It's funny though....the 3 last times i've been hung up and had to break off, the 8lb trilene breaks before the 4.5lb drennan does.

Then the fish snaps the drennan.

:?: That's odd! Where is the eight parting? at the swivel?

You might have some rotten line there pal! Have you tried Siglon V? Their eight pound line is only 0.205 mm thin! I don't think there is a smaller diameter line per pound test out there. But correct me if I'm wrong.

Actually I used to run Siglon on my pin although now run Iron Silk. Drennan flouro is like rope and I would dare to bet if you did a tension test on 4.5 it would break around the 7-8lb tension.( I can see the mainline mono breaking especially as we know mono breaks down over time) I often run drennan, maxima, seaguar, etc. and drennan flouro seems to be my personal preference for leader material.
We were quick to get started today and therefore went with the setup from last outing (4.5 flouro leader) I also agree under murky conditions heavier leaders won't affect presentation the same as they would under clear water.

I think the key to the breakoff today was possible abraision at the hook...I forgot that the shaker from earlier on had taken that fairly deep and possibly hook removal bruised the flouro at the knot.

Anyway we'll get his bigger sister next time. :D

By the way Mark...I like the choice of gear for that bad boy....saddle up -yeeehaaa-fish on!!!

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents ref Iron Silk. I gave it a try and found it to break regularly and easy. I don't know if it is was due to small nicks or the sun but there were times even when I retied and tested the knot, it would just snap, while other times you couldn't break it no matter how hard you pulled. Sometimes I would have to pull off a good 10-20 ft of line to get a good section. My feeling is that it is not at all forgiving to any abrasion, even the smallest most unoticeable kind. I had too many questionable breakoffs to depend on it so I scrapped it and don't recommend it.
Better to consider it now than on the river bank with your jaw draping and your line blowing in the wind.
