Fishing with the father in law - can always count on perch!

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Fishing with the father in law - can always count on perch!

Post by Markus »

PL's folks arrived last night from NS. I picked them up at the Hamilton airport and after the standard hugs and kisses with the kids, my father-in-law (Alex) turns to me and says "where can I get a fishing licence for the morning?" :P

We decided to try a morning fish for bows in the creeks. Fishing creeks is something he is familar with, however the size of the trout is another matter.

I had my back turned when I heard him say "I got one on...but it's a dink". I continue what I'm doing and I hear Alex exclaim "This fish has legs!!"  I turn and he has a slimmy mudpuppy on!

Next he sets the hook on a big fish and it screams under cover and instantly breaks him off. This got him pumped up. He soon had another fish on and landed a small 14 inch shaker. We kept him for lunch.

Not 10 minutes later he was into another good fish and he faught this one well. He played it out and had it to shore and the hook just popped out. :? It was a 5-6 pound bow. Colored up nice too.

Markus: "sorry pops, but we gotta go".

Alex "Can we get them here all day?"

Markus "There's better spots"

Alex: "Jesus....where?"

Markus: "Niagara River"

Alex: "what time we leaving in the morning?"

:P

I have a couple things to tidy up at the office, then we're gonna hit Long Point Bay and see if anything is happening there. Then tomorrow, it's Niagara time. This will be my first trip this season. :P

Sorry for no pics...we had the camera, but the battery was home plugged in the wall. We'll snap some this afternoon.

Lunch.....

Mark,

That concession of the creek has been producing good in the sections you've been fishing. I'm sure your father-in-law will go back with some great memories after a few days fishing with you. :D Good luck at the Niagara.

I know another guy that part of Big Creek runs through as well and we'll have to see if we can get down and flogg some of that part of the creek as well...maybe next week.

Anyway talk soon,

Friday evening we motored out to Bluffs Bar. Unfortunately, conditions were too tough to fish. Floating weeds were just too thick and the 3 foot waves tossed you up on the bar too quickly to drift. So we had a wet and wild boat ride instead.

This morning we meet up with Jammer for a shore cast. Alex picked up a shaker in the dark and that was all the action we had.

The wind was howling, so I decided to go for a duck hunt. Knocked down 2 mallards, 1 black and 2 golden eye.

The wind died down enough for use to give the bay a try again. This time we anchored and perch fished. We picked up around 30 keepers in the 8-12 inch range.

Sorry for the pictureless reports. Pink Lady laid claim to the digital for the day to take pictures of the kids playing with their grandmother. She has nerve.

Alex and I had been ordered to remain home tomorrow. We might get out again Monday morning before he flies home.

He was very pleased with his perch dinner tonight. :D

Good Report Mark!!!

Nice to see you guys got some more decent fishing in. Sounds like you had pretty good success on the ducks...mallard breast and perch fillets...hmmm (wow makes a guy hungry)

Hope he gets into a 12 pound screaming piece of steel before he has to leave....something to remember his outings with ya. (kinda the icing on the cake if ya know what I mean)

Good stuff!!!

Pan fried WIG. I'm shopping for a heavy duty fryer...I wanna be equipt for the next visit from the gang!

My fishing experience ended on a sour note with dear old father-in-law.

On Sunday he wanted to go out again, so I said "Lets go". Off to the Outflow for some bass.....

We have had the boat out a couple times, so he's familar with the launch routine. After we loaded up the boat, he grabbed the rope and I backed in. He gave me the go ahead wave so I pulled out and went to park the truck.

When I stepped out of the truck, I could hear my boat running. I thought, "ooh, he's warming it up."

I continued to finish locking up the truck and began to slide into my survival suite when I heard the striper throttle down and I turned to see him ripping up the channel. He was doing about 20-25kms/hr in a no wake zone and beagan a series of sharp S turns. :?

Then I heard it. "CLUNK!" and he exclaims "WTF!".

He limps the boat back to the dock and I put it back on the trailer. I ask "What where you thinking?" He said he just wanted to take her for a rip and warm it up.

I lost my prop. I thought it was the skeg, but just the prop. Prop shaft is fine too. I had a spare in the boat, but I decided best just to call it a day.

He passes me $30 when we're in the truck and says "Here. this is for the prop" I asked when I'd see the other $170. He said "get it from the marina...what kind of marina has rocks in their channels?"

He's gone now. I went fishing this morning. I enjoyed the silence of the sunrise. All is good.

Well that doesnt sound to good. But just the prop is better than what it could have been.
Nice one you found lurking in the creek.
