Petition For Year Round Crappie Fishing in the Kawarthas
Petition For Year Round Crappie Fishing in the Kawarthas
Everybody, I have started this petition in hopes that we can make a change for the Kawarthas in 2007. Please look it over and sign the petition to help walleye stocks in the Kawartha lakes for future generations.

Hey, Rich.
Not so sure a year round season would be appropriate. Maybe an extended season, but not year round. Just my gut instinct, which on occasion bucks science, but oh well...
PS: Rich, you're a good writer; are you schooling for this? You should be.

Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.
Thank you for reading it over Wolfe and I appreciate your opinion.
I'm not necessarily looking for the laws to be changed with this petition. But as it is now I don't believe the MNR is looking into this matter as seriously as they should be. Perhaps with enough anglers' signatures it will convince the OMNR to look into this matter thoroughly and scientifically going into 2007.
And no I am not being schooled yet but I believe I will definitely look into some outdoor writing classes in the future, as I really enjoy it.

Year Round Crappie Fishing In the Kawarthas
The only problem I see is all fishing is closed in the Winter currently except for Lake Scugog(A far as I know). Opening this whole region(Div 6) up to Crappies would mean that other fish will be incidentally caught through the ice and or targeted illegally(we aren't all by the book guys...).
And... if we get rid of all the Crappie what will the Muskie eat?
This is why we have Fisheries Biologists to answer all these questions...

First of all the muskies main diet in the Kawarthas is perch & rock bass as they are far more abundant in the areas where musky are found.
And yes, there will be incidental catches of walleye OOS but with proper education people will release them immediately. The open ice fishing on Scugog hasn't hurt anything there, in fact it is one of the better fisheries of the Kawarthas.
As for people poaching walleye - if they are gonna poach, they are doing it anyway. You say there aren't enough CO's to check it out. Well there are also not enough COs to be checking Rice Lake for ice fishermen. There are people that go out ice fishing on Rice Lake at night and illegally harvest fish species.
The need for more COs is an entirely different topic anyway.
Thank you for your opinion on this.

Hey BBR....
I beg to differ about the Kawartha Muskies main diet that you have stated....
You open up the Kawartha's to winter Crappie fishing and it will be completely depleted in 2 years, tops.
Good luck with your petition, but I think (as someone else stated) that it would be much better to have an extended season.
Just my two cents.

Crappie season
BBR:
Good luck to you. If you don't get a year round season, an extended one would be a start.
Unfortunately, the cement is probably already cast and hardened, and your petition will be deposited promptly in file 13.
Over the years I took part in several petitions, presentations, to the MNR regarding hunting seasons, limits, fishing, stocking, you name it.
They WILL send someone to meet with you. This person will have no power.
They WILL listen politely to all you have to say.
They WILL smile condescendingly and talk to you like you are a drooling idiot.
You are only a "man off the street"; you have no DEGREE in..........whatever.
They will cluster in small circles like Muskox, each one protecting their buddies butt.
They will make no committments, say nothing concrete.
After you leave they will get together over a few beer and laugh like bastards at everything you said.
You and your petition will be dissed and ignored.
Sorry Rich, tis the way she goes.
Hire a lobbyist to suck up or have a really big violent demonstration.
Best of luck
Jigs.

Oh, Jigs, you crack me up!Jigs wrote:They will cluster in small circles like Muskox, each one protecting their buddies butt.
BBR, I do think a year round season would be over the top pressure on the crappies. After all, most people that fish for crappies, eat them.
I would be interested to hear how you make out with this -- what kind of response you get, feedback, etc.
