Wellers/Presqu'ile Bay??

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Wellers/Presqu'ile Bay??

Post by CCLad »

Hi folks,

I am hoping that one of you might have some fishing experience on Wellers/Presqu'ile bay's for Walleye (opener in May) &&&& Share some of your insight on the fishing.

Make a long storey short, I have had a trailer on West lake for the past 12 years and had to just recently relocate it to a park in Weller's bay. The closest I have come to fishing this part of the lake is about 8 miles due south for Salmon. Without trying to pry into any of your secret spots or anything like that, any advice on the walleye fishing in this area (for the opener) would be greatly appreciated. I usually end up fishing the other end of the Bay of Q. Is it worth fishing around Weller's or am I better off to trailer to the bay.

Thanks in advance.

Hi CCLad!

I moved from Quebec city to Brighton last year. We fished Presqu'Ile Bay during the walleye opening weekend last year and catched nothing. The bay is really shallow and with the so clear water that we have now in Lake Ontario I would be surprised that walleyes will stay in that bay in the future! At the deapest spot we were seeing the bottom very well. The light is penetrating the water too much and walleye is afraid of the light as you know.

We've also scuba dived the bay last fall. The underwater visibility is too high (nice for divers but not nice for walleye fishing!). I can imagine that we mayhave more success at night, maybe walleyes come in the bay to eat when it's darker in the water.

Anyway. I wait for others to give some feedbacks here. I talked a lot with local fishermen and they all told me that the fishing in the bay is not as good as it was many years ago...

If you want, we can arrange a trip to fish the bay together next summer, if someone tell us the tricks! I live 2 corners from Brighton boat ramps...

Thanks for the insight fishchallenger, I'll send you a PM.

No apparantly I can't. I do realize the change in water clarity in the area. The Bay of Q is also no where near what it used to be like. (Filthy mussle's) Doesn't the trent system flow into weller's bay?

As for getting together for a fish, that sounds good. I'm down that way on the weekend's (as many as I can anyhow.)

Brighton bay is a hard fish, your right the water is to clear , few pike on the east side past the canel and again in the tall weeds on the west side . Just moved to Brighten 2 years ago myself and I haven't gotten any eyes out of there yet. I went alot last year with my son and no luck , best bet got to Wellers bay or maybe down Conncicon way , west lake , heard it's weedy in the summer , or stick to BOQ. By the way , just live up the road from you as well and work at the same place. Live about 2 min drive to boat launch . Have a 14 Sylvin myself. Good luck on the opener

I too moved to Brighton a couple years ago, I have been out in Brighton Bay a couple times without any luck for Walleye. Good Bass though (in season of course). I have seen some monster dead walleye though, pushing 15lbs by the looks of them, saw them along presquile beach last summer.

Nice seeing so many people from the Brighton area. I am near the LCBO and Tosh's Tavern. If you see someone rollerblading or jogging at night, that would be me lol.

Last night I fished the big lake "O" in front of Wellington. No fishes on the scrren unfortunately. I was surprised to see that the water is still VERY cold --> 8 celcius / 8 F. That suggest that the Chinooks are probably still near the US south side of the lake.

Anyone can tell me if usually the salmons are arrived in Wellington/Brighton at this time of the year?? From what I read I was thinking so but I may be wrong.

I'll fish again tomorrow night and all next weekend so I'll be able to keep you informed on that.

I put the boat in the water at the Gosport marina in Brighton. Nice spot. First time I was using that ramp!

I was told that the Chinooks are probably in the area already but they stay near the surface to enjoy the cold water, which is the result of the North wind that we had for a while.

So, if you go, fish the upper water column.

Water last night was 54 degrees at the surface. Fishfinder showed some big fishes at 40 feet in 105 feet of water. No catch yesterday for us unfortunately.

Hey Challenger,

I have fished out of Wellington for the last 14 years. (thus I wasn't familiar on the fishing in Weller's bay)

As for the Salmon, for the last two seasons they were hot in the middle of June on. I'm referring to Nicholson Ils. /Scotch bonnet area, 7 miles west of Wellington. If your going to venture out again, I would recommend heading to this area, of course I don't know the size of your boat, big water requires the right equipment for safety reasons. Usually the salmon would gather out in front of the harbor a little later in the season. (West point could be worth a look as well.)

Though typically in years past, the Salmon fishing kicked into high gear around the middle of July with the first bite in or around Canada day (for us any way's). If their not hitting now I would suspect, they should turn on any day now. If you mark nothing out near the vicinity of Bonnet try south and west area's - check your map as there is a number of shallow shoals out South/West), perhaps their not in yet.

Most of my contacts that fish/charter in the area have moved down the lake (west) when our trailer park closed last year. I'm trying to get a hold of a couple of guy's and if I hear anything I'll post it.

I should be up fishing (hopefully) on the Canada day weekend.

Good luck and please let us know how you did.

Check that last post. I just got off the phone with a friend and the fishing was good to excellent this weekend. Boats were coming in with good catch reports (8).

The fish have been around for a bit now, but turned on this weekend.

Good luck
