I have had the privilege to fish all the Kawartha lakes for 30 years. Over that time I have seen many changes in the lakes water quality, weed growth patterns and the effects on the Walleye fishery partly due to invasive species like Zebra mussels and Crappie.
I have certainly seen and caught some nice fish over those years but never have I caught so many big fish in one day as this weekend. I fished the Canada/US Tri-lakes Walleye tournament (18th year in a row) on Sat. and my partner and I won the event with a weight of 20.12 lbs for 5 eyes. Whats more is that I lost a another 5lb fish at the net that would have put our weight over the 22lb mark! Although its often said that fishing is 90% skill and 10% luck I think it was the opposite for us on Sat. We had a decent pre-fish on Thurs/Friday catching fish on Pigeon, Buckhorn and Chemong but did not get one even close to these. We started the day working some deep weedlines with bucktail and plastic jigs that usually produce and after fishing a couple of area's without a keeper I decided to try a rock shoal I had not fished since last summer.....the gamble paid off. Slowly working plastic jigs and 1/4oz heads onto and around the structure on the second cast I caught a 6lb fish..... minutes later another brute in the 5lb class followed by others in the 2.5-4lb range and loosing another 5lb fish at the net! All of these fish were live-released back into the lake to continue to produce and grow.
Here is pic of some of the fish at the weight-in show:
Take care and Good Fish'n... Greg.
