Best way to remove smell from lures?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Best way to remove smell from lures?

Post by cheg »

Hi all

I had something in my tackle box that left a strong perfume/chemical smell throughout and I was wondering what would be the best thing to get rid of the smell on all of my lures/ accessories.

Thanks

Alex

buy new ones. no but you can go buy some of the hand soap that they sell at lebarons, it removes odors. well it's for hands, but it should work on lures.

The 'perfume' smell

Actually, it wasn't perfume per say. It was due to a can of Off (with a fresh scent) that went off in my tackle box!

Yeah, I tried Le Baron on Sunday...only to find out they're closed :x . Someone somewhere mentioned some type of anise spray. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?

Two things to try:

Soak everything in a bucket with Arm & Hammer baking soda. This will neutralize some of the odor. The unfortunate part of the deal is the aeresol contains DEET I believe so take a further step.

Go to the drugstore and pick up some Oil of Annis. Place in the tackle box once your reloaded and put a piece of cloth in the neck of the annis bottle to act as a wick and leave the box sit for a few days.

Toss all the soft plastic baits they are beyond recovery, hard baits and metal should come out OK.

Throw the Box out
I had this Happen to me with my First Big Tackle Box.
Later I found out NOT to KEEP INSECT REPELLANTS IN YOUR BOX
Everyone say it......
"DON'T KEEP REPELLENTS IN YOUR TACKLE BOX"
Your Lures become Fish Repellents
The Plastic Tackle Box will retain alot of the DEET and transfering back to your lures.
After talking to People about Not catching Fish and Telling what Happened
I ended up throwing the Box out(replaced w/ Newer,Bigger,Shinyer)
Some Lures (w/ No Scratchs and Remember to REMOVE the Hooks and slip rings and soak seperatly, rinse and let hooks dry on their own) I was able to save by Soaking them in Luke warm Water and Bio Degradable Dish Soap(the lures caught fish after this)once their scratched,DEET seems to adhere to materials lures are made of.

Best thing in all this for me..............
Wife asked me to Store it in my Box for when her and the kids come out fishing..
She felt Guilty and Pitched in to Replace.

remind me to not ask you for a ride in your truck

joco, you may have to have it professionally cleaned, especially if some of the juices ran out onto the carpeting or seats ($$$)

As for the insect repellant on lures, that stull will eat away plastics. Look at the warnings on the bottle - I don't have one in front of me right now, but it usually says something like do not apply to plastics or painted surfaces, etc.
