Black Donald Lake report

Post by HogHunter »

Well, we were up at 5:30 and on our way to see Bowzog to grab some essentials. Our intentions were to hit Clear Lake for some smallies and eyes but it wasn't meant to be. We have rented boats on this lake a couple of different times and they have always had many boats to choose from so we didn't bother booking one ahead, and of course we arrive at 8ish and all are gone/booked. Lesson learned. So instaed of waste the day we decided to head down to Black Donald Lake and rent a boat there from White Pines Lodge. Pricey, but what the hell.

We finally got on the water around 9:30 and the weather was holding out (for now). We started throwing tubes and topwaters around points and humps for smallies and managed quite a few but all under 3 lbs.. So we tried for some eyes, found some nice drop-offs and ledges and jigged and ripped crank baits. We got two very small guys. On to pike. We hit some back bays with spinner baits, topwaters and crankbaits and I hooked into my personal best pike...notice I said hooked into...once I got him by the boat I grabbed him under the gill and hoisted him up over the gunnel, with one good shake my hand slipped, back in the water he went, fortunately he was still hooked but not for long, uner the boat he went and my line wrapped around the motor, gone. Damn it, oh well, good fight.

An hour or so later my roommate managed this little 5 pounder on a spinerbait.

So, on our way back (as the rain, thunder and lightning rolled in), there was a bay I was eyeing up on our way out that I wanted to stop at. The guy that rented us the boat said there were largemouth in the lake, just few and far between. Well I'm a sucker and had to try for one. The bay had bass written all over it, shallow, warm, weedy, lillies and stumps. So, we pull in, on goes a 7" yum dinger and into the base of the biggest deadhead in the bay. As soon as the worm sinks out of sight, the heartracing jumping of the line began, I reeled up the slack and sank the hooks into this guy.

So the day started off a little shakey, but it all worked out for the best. Gotta love the fishing adventures...sometimes the best trips are ones that aren't planned at all (which are 99%of the ones I organise). Hope everyone had a good weekend.

HH,

Nice bass. Black Donald seemed like a hard lake to fish the few times I have been there - lots of steep drop-offs and rock shoals, with not a lot to differentiate one spot from another. There is definately some nice sized pike in there though - I wonder what they are feeding on.

Tough luck about the pike that got away.

Thanks for sharing the report.

Thanks for your replies guys, much appreciated. 140 views and 2 replies, guess I better catch a bigger bass. Or get in with the FH "in" crowd...HA!

I agree FF, the lake can be very difficult to fish, it as all very similar. You have to cover alot of water.

Thanks Spinner, it's possibly my personal best although I had no scale.

HogHunter,

Covering water was definately a theme for the days that I have gone there in the past. Im really not so impressed with the public boat launch on BlackDonald last time I was there - it looked like it could eat your tow vehicle. I would suggest that if you are interested in largemouth and you are headed out that way again, take a look at Canonto Lodge on Norcan. There is more buckets there than you can shake a stick at, they may be mostly small guys but they are still a blast, plus you still have access to part of the madawaska if you want to chase walleye - just watch out for rocks...

As for getting replies on reports, it does seem quite slow around here recently. Even FishHawk himself put up a great report a week or two ago about Clayton lake with a nice fat 4lb+ bucketmouth and he only got 1 or 2 replies as well. And you cant be much more of the "in crowd" than he is.

Im not sure how accurate the "reads" counter is either - at least dont take it to mean that many unique people have viewed the report.

Im sure that your report is appreciated by many people out there. We all like to read the reports and see the pics of fishing adventures while we are stuck at desks or unable to get out on the water. Thanks for sharing.
