Help catching Walleye near Belleville

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Help catching Walleye near Belleville

Post by 80083r »

Hi,

I'm new here (though I've been lurking for a while) - and I hope I'm asking this in the right place.

Fishing on the Bay of Quinte (and Lake Consecon and Weller's Bay) and it's been... well... years since I was a fisherman. I grew up fishing Waterhen Lake in Saskatchewan (there are some MONSTER pike out there), and as a kid, didn't have much interest in walleye. That was... a hundred years ago.

So, as a consquence, I can dip a bare hook in a 5 gallon pail and catch pike. But I'm having trouble finding Walleye. I'm not familiar with largemouth bass either (or smallmouth in southern Ontario).

I'm limited in my range, also - it's my Father in law's boat, and the truck that pulls it may or may not start every time the key is turned. Basically, I can launch in Belleville, or Trenton or on Weller's Bay, and that's about it.

It's a 14' aluminum boat with a 15hp Yamaha on it, so we can't run really far, either :)

I know there are fish out there - I've talked to people coming back with fish - I just don't know where to go. I think we've got tackle nailed - worms seem to work good the few times we've been able to find fish.

A map with some x's on it would be great.

Oh - one more problem - my FIL is in a cast for his wrist, so for the moment, we're limited to trolling.

Any suggestions?

You can launch at the public launch in Desoronto and head east you'll get to the mouth of the Napanee river, just troll back and forth in the area with bottom bouncer and worm harnesses and you should be able to get a few.

Thanks, but I think Deseronto might be a little too far to drive (I'll talk it over with FIL though).

We're based out of Consecon (south of Trenton, for those who don't know).

There's a public launch over at Northport, a little further than going into Belleville and launching at Myers Pier. According to my latest B o Q Angling Adventures Map, there are three launchs in Belleville.

Hope that gets out on B o Q.

Hmmm... maybe I should provide a little more info. :)

It's tough typing it in - you forget stuff.

We Have fished the bay, and caught some silver bass, and two substandard pickerel :)

We've tried launching across from trenton airbase, and fishing along that shore (about 16' of water) with no luck.

We've launched on the far side of the bay bridge right in belleville and fishing from there both east and west, with some bites, but not much luck.

We've launched at the massasauga conservation area (across from point anne) and caught a couple of small pickerel, and a bunch of round gobys, and fished around the corner near big island with no luck.

I'm not sure if it's our methods (trolling near bottom with an erie deary or a worm harness) or our timing (late morning, early afternoon, and the evening) or too much/too little depth (14' up to 30'). Or if we just don't know where the fish are?

weeds

They've been near weed edges all year so far. Drag your spinners/cranks along the edges (10-12FOW) or wherever u mark weeds coming 1/2 way up the water column. I havent needed to spend a lot of time deeper than 14FOW so far.

As for location....it's the same from teh canal (by you) to deseronto as far as weedbeds in 10-12 FOW. The early morning guys seem to have better catch rates too.
