On the train from Toronto a day early. Spent $9.00 for slow WiFi Internet Access to get caught up on all the great things happening here on Fish-Hawk.Net.
Needless to say.....I'm a little disappointed with where this has gone....and I was so very excited to have an additional goal of entering into the Nickle+ Club like many of my fellow anglers.
I need to think about how I'm going to handle this now.

I just read 5 pages of this thread... And I have come to realize that their is too much bitching and not enough fishing going on. If it looks like 5lbs, and your scale says it was 5lbs, and if it feels good, then you had a good day. Who cares what others think about your 5lb fish? Something bigger would gladly eat it - bass are all Muskie food, etc.!
Don't pee pee off Bobber or Fish Hawk - the last guys that did that are almost back to normal brain power, after hundreds of hours of treatment. Some may never recover...
If you want to bitch at each other, go away, and leave FH.net to those that want to share, learn and have fun.
Bitching like this is one reason I have not been posting much. The other reasons include young teenage kids, soccer (it's a bugger when the kids are good at it), and other family things that I have enjoyed.
But, Muskie season is now upon us, and I have a goal this fall and I will reach it.
Keep fishing, and if your posting here, keep it happy, or go to another bitching and fishing.com site.
Just my 2 cents
Peter

If we all know the fish is short of five pounds what is the problem, if they belive or want us to belive it was 5lbs let it be, if you dont agree that is up to you, why make a big deal out of it, all these post about dishonesty and accusations. All a waist of your time to write it and My time to actually read it. I did waist my time reading all about it and at the end my thought was, DAME CRYBABIES. Let it go, its all for fun, no one is getting hurt. We have all seen fish that did not look like there weight and to your surprise was 5 lbs or more, Its happened to me..

I Agree, let's fish.....It's like in school, people who cheat on the tests, are only cheating themselves....If someones post is bogus then they are hoping for a congratulations that they probably won't get, so they only hurt themselves.
If I ever caught a legit 5 pounder I would be pretty happy with myself. But until then I still get fun out of catching whatever fish I do catch.
All in all though I would much rather be in the 50" musky club
**sorry bass guys***
but hopefully most of us fish for the thrill of the hunt, the time on the water, the occasional peace and quiet, and not the right to be able to prove yourself.... But having said that I still enjoy seeing everyones catches, they act as motivation to get back on the water....
So keep the posts and reports coming all, regardless of size...

Hey folks, after a good nights sleep and a little thinking, here is my position as far as it goes for the accuracy of a fish's weight.
I hontestly didn't expect it to go here, and really wanted to keep it simple and fun, without a whole lot of rules. I'll continue along those lines, as there are a lot of great oppinions and messages in this post, and I encourage that discussion, but we all still need to be respectable of one another.
I don't believe Justin's intent in his original post was to call anyone out, but simply to point out in his oppinion that there were perhaps a few entries that he believed were not 5lbs. I believe he was simply attempting to support the idea of the Nickle+Club and ensure we are just all being honest with each other and ourselves, so that the Nickle+ thing does not become an Internet joke of 5lb claims for fish no larger than 3 or 4. Whether or not he was successful in delivering that message is most likely another discussion. Would you like to be part of something that's considered a joke? I know I don't, and I'm sure you don't either. Good message.....perhaps read into a little much, but none the less, a good message.
Now having said that, other good messages and topics in this post include...
~ Accuracy of Digital vs. Spring scales from Dana, Justin, and CCB
~ Perception of fish size in a pic from RJ, Wallyboss, and others
~ and even fish that have that 5lb look, but alas there was no scale to weigh it at the time. In any case, they are trophies in my books.
All of these have valid points and contribute to accuracy of fish weight.
I was fishing with a partner this year and he hooked into a great fish, lots of weight and lots of fight. When we got her in it definately had that 5lb look, big eyes, flaring gills, long, and a huge belly. This definately was 5 or over. We proceeded to weight it on a digital scale. It came in at 4.3lbs. We thought, no way, this fish has got to be at least 5. We did it again and it came in at 4.5lbs....so we took another scale we had, weighed the fish and it came in at 5.3 lbs. Weighed it again on the original scale and it hit 5.1 lbs this time. So, was the fish 5lbs+? Well, I'd say it was, but there was definately some weighing inaccuracy in those scales somewhere.
In any case, I meant this club to be nothing but a fun thing and a goal for folks to get pumped and reach that great milestone of 5lbs. That being said though, I don't want it to become a joke, not saying that it will or it is, but I don't want it to go there. That's the message I believe Justin was trying to deliver, that all, there's nothing else. If anyone doesn't agree with that, then no problem, all I ask is that you respect oppinions or take it somewhere else, please.
Please continue to post your prize catches. If you say you caught it, and have a good pic, then congratulations, I'll put it up.
I know there are some out there in the world that may find it funny, and take advantage of this opportunity by posting small fish pics and claiming them to be 5+ knowing that I have already said I'd put them up, but there are limits and I'd like to ask that I be the judge of that please. I don't think I'd post a 5 pounder that looks like this.... this fish is 2.5...maybe 2.7lbs, that's all. If it looks close though, I don't indend on questioning. I don't want that responsibility on my head.

In the end, it's all in fun, as long as it doesn't become a joke. If it does, then I'll consider removing it and killing the project. I'd hate to do that though cause I was so looking forward to the day when my pics gets in there. I'll leave it to you folks, the decision of whether or not this stays rests in your hands.
Let's move on and get back to fishing. Thanks everyone for your oppinions and comments. I'll leave the topic open for continued discussion if there are those who care to comment, but if it goes down the wrong path again, it will be locked.
Thanks for your cooperation,

Hey Dana,
Yes you're right, not near 5 at all. That was my point, it's 2.7 at best. In any case, yes it's all in fun and I'll let the community decide prior to posting in club. I think it will become appararent if the decision is left to the majority. I was hoping to avoid it, but oh well. I'd rather do this than kill thel project. I want to get myself in there....I don't know why....but I do.
Not sure what you mean about losing a post. Do you know what the Subject was?
cheers,

scales
when a digi scale is working good it is accurate.
They are kind of flakey some times and some don't always give accurate weights.
A high quality spring[and of course balance] scale
if it has not been wrecked ..is accurate time after time.
they are pricey but taken care of will last decades
dana
actually most of the time fall largie fishing sucks
when they are on you can have a field day
sometimes they school up and prowl the flats
and you will get fish after fish.
Most often they are basically the same place they were in the summer..
they like arrowhead patches, canes etc.
they have been on the feed so they can get dang big.
