ideal location to retire in Canada? - (think fishing)
ideal location to retire in Canada? - (think fishing)
Some of us board members are getting a bit long in the tooth and as I get closer to retirement ( 10 more years ), I start thinking about where I would like to spend my summers. British Colombia is stunning but expensive. Ideally, I'd like to be above the Northbay-Sudbury line. I have Ashma and I find as the humidity and polution disappear as you go that far north, I breath so much better. These factors would be considered in my decision.
I'd just like to hear if other people have thought about this subject, and where and why they would like to retire in a particular spot?

Me I would love going back to my hometown of Smooth Rock Falls in Northern Ont. (60 miles north of Timmins) But my wife says that she will
not be around if I ever come back.
But when I retire she still has about 8 years of working to go. One of the joys of a much younger wife. I told her that I would go for 8 years and fish my A%$ off and then come back for her retirement party but that is when she mentioned not being around.
Seems like I'll have to do some road trips.

I have an uncle who retired a couple of years ago and has moved up to Elliot Lake from Ottawa.
He loves it and he doesn't find the winters to bad (he grew up in Sudbury). His wife is not to sure yet about the winters.
They bought a 1200sqft detached bungalow for under 75k.
They have found no issue upthere with health care. They actually found new doctors alot easier then down here. Which is good considering Elliot Lake is catering to the retired.

Hey guys theres no place like home born here fish here and yes Im retired and still here in Ottawa.when you fish in your home town and see American coming up and paying big bucks to fish in the ottawa and rideau rivers does it relly make sense to go anywhere else (unless winter is problem when you get older)

Great question scuro - it is great to read about.
I'm from the North as well - from New Liskeard. It's interesting to think about retiring up there - I do miss it and I'm looking forward to going home for Christmas now that I have a new-found love for ice fishing...
You're right about the air quaility.

I've never travelled out that way but it sure looks enticing on the map. I keep on meaning to get out there...perhaps this summer. I'd guess that heat and humidity would only come a few days in the year if even at all. I'm sure there would be some development but I'd guess you wouldn't get that distorting Toronto influence. Heck I'd just like to drive on a highway and not feel like I'm in a moving river of steel, as I so often do on the 401. Property prices would be a little lower then the Muskokas too! The fishing pressure would be a lot. Imagine...drive up in June return in October....Perhaps I'm projecting too much....Grimace wrote:Northwestern ontario.
