How big of a pike fits through a 6" hole?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

To answer all of your questions on this topic I have not only done it but been there when it has happened. I have personally caught a 18lbs Northern pike through a 6" and the same day there were 2 muskie caught through the ice as well by my buddies. One was about 25lbs the other was low 30lbs range both were quickly landed and quickly released.. They fit throughwith much ease. In fact once they got there head in they swam up themselves. So i know 6" is more then big enough for many fish. Ive seen it happen many times.
But would you specifically target trophy pike with a 6" hole??? Thats like fishing in the pads for largies with 6lb mono...

Hey man

Definetly,

I dont get the gas auger out until I cant drill 5 consecctive holes with the hand auger. So I mean no matter where I go or what I fish ill be using the fin bore.. So light, so easy, and so quick.. And Id have no doubt in targeting large pike. If I can land a 18lbs which im sure I wont beat anytime soon through the ice. Im confident in targeting pike with a 6" hole.. I guess its just something you may have to see and do to have confidence in!

Monsterrelease....

I have one in the truck, use it for reopening the holes after a day or so if I go back to a hot spot! 6" has got a larger diameter then youd think! Not many pike wont fit through it unless your out west hunting for gators!

Guess I've heard too many fables of big pike not fitting through the hole...

I think ice thickness plays a big part as I said before 6" hole 20" thick... quite the challenge...

Nah Monster Realease you are just calling it as it is and real fishermen of multi species don't use a 6 inch auger . 6 inch auger may be fine but its not a game fisherman's tool by CHOICE . I use a 10 inch and an 8 I have also and there are reasons for this which I'm more than willing to share and I actually spend time on the hardwater dontcha know . LOL :D Not sure where a few here are coming from but sure not fishing thru thick ice for gamefish .

LOL

Trapper, I hardwater fish twice a week for 8 hours at a time, on many lakes for multi species. From Lakers, Pike, Walleye, Crappie, Perch, Rainbows, Specs, and more..... A 6" hole in diameter for those species is more then enough to bring them in. Sure the bigger the easier, but im out there for a challenge. So it doesnt bother ME. I own a Jiffy 8" gas auger but only use it like I said in my original post when the ice gets to thick to make many holes. When I go we have made up to 30-40 holes some outings with the hand auger. Thats of course with 3-5 people.. So I would say we do more then the average hardwater fisherman. Last year we fished well over a dozen different lakes searching for different game fish. We drove hours and hours on the road to enjoy the hardwater in the coldest of days. And thats without a shack!!!! Now we got shacks and more gear ready for the new year.

"I dont think drilling 8 & 10" holes make you a "REAL" multi species fisherman! Or even more knowledgeable. Maybe just a lil more prepared for our dream fish to peep his eye through your hole!

I like to chisel holes till it gets to thick and then its 9 hole... if specs, browns or bows are on the agenda.. no chisel  I've been lookin at Ice for a couple of days now... we'll be on the ice by christmas :) safely
