This is a great question dh, I have pretty much every deep down taildancer and manns + 20s and reef runners and I never really know the depths they are running at. It depends like you say on how much line is out, I think the more out the deeper the dive. But there are alot of factors like type of line and I guess trolling speed etc..... I usually just assume I am down somewhere between 20 and 30 ft. But it would be nice to have a bit more accuracy. Once again good question.

Those tail dancers are great lures.
I have the precision trolling book that has curves that give you the depth the lure should be running according to the amount of line out using 10lbs xt. They have conversion factors for different lbs test and fireline also.
Funny thing is they say it's not very dependant on speed mostly just line out, sure there is current also but they did a lot of research on it. I have the reef runner info but my book doesn't have the taildancers.

Taildancer
Well according to rapala.com
Tail Dancer - Freshwater
The Tail Dancer's banana-style balsa wood body creates a deadly wobble. Add an internal rattle with field tested colors and you get a lure that jerks lunker jaws in bass, salmon and trout fisheries.
RUNNING DEPTH: 6' - 15'
HOW TO FISH THE TAIL DANCER
The stop-and-go technique works wonders with the Tail Dancer. Crank your bait down, then pause for a one or two count, then crank ahead, then stop. The lure during the stop counts actually backs up, simulating a fish riding the currents present in all waters.
Another sure-fire technique is to simulate a feeding baitfish by bottom-bouncing the Tail Dancer while trolling or retrieving.
Trolling the weedlines with the Tail Dancer has also proven an extremely effective technique. Pros attribute the success to the wide-tail action with a relatively stationary head, a close resemblance to real minnows.
Deep Tail Dancer - Freshwater
Specifically designed to get deep into where the lunkers lie during the mid-summer to early fall months, the Deep Tail Dancer will prove to be an angler's best companion. The Rapala lure design team and the Pro Staff anglers joined forces to design and test this extra-deep diving lure. Incorporating all the positive attributes that have made the Tail Dancer a success, the Deep Tail Dancer features an enlarged extreme diving lip that plummets the lure to 30-plus feet with ease. To ensure success, Pro Staff anglers across the country have spent the past year and a half field-testing many different configurations, with a special focus paid to the color patterns, and then culling the large selection to the top ten colors that will work in any body of water. Front red VMC Pyramid Point hooks (for a wounded minnow simulation) offer quick piercing and the strength to withstand the fiercest battles.
HOW TO FISH THE DEEP TAIL DANCER
A unique trolling lure designed to reach 30 feet on its own the Deep Tail Dancer will hold its tracking even at fast speeds without any compromise in action. The unique color patterns were chosen by the Rapala Pro Staff and proven with over a years testing under tournament conditions prior to release. The intent for design was for triggering fish suspending at deeper depths with a hard wobbling action and high visible flashing color patterns for open water conditions. To fish the Deep Tail Dancer tie directly to the split ring using the double clinch knot. Lob cast the lure out, release 100 feet of line, engage reel and get ready. Trolling speeds play a critical part in the effectiveness of any trolling lure. Here's a tip for successful trolling: Check action at various speeds, next to the boat on short line. Now run the Deep Tail dancer at a variety of speeds until you discover the desired action.

As a basic reference guide just use the same dive curve as the Mann Stretch 20+ and the Reef Runner 800 Deep Diver. Also this will allow you remember the basic dive curve for 3 cranks without referencing the book every time. No matter how much line you put out most cranks can not dive deeper than 30ft with out some sort of additional weight.
If you want to be very accurate then I would recommend you purchase the latest version of Precision Trolling - I never go fishing with out it!
Best of luck...

Depends on which model of Tail Dancer you are talking about. I purchased the 8th Edition of Precision Trolloing this Fall and it shows 3 different models of Tail Dancers. The deepest model is model TD-11 which will go to 28' with 165' of 10# (.0134") mono, or 34' with 170' 10/4 Fireline. I consider this book to be an excellent investment if you are into serious trolling, and heartily recommend it. Hope this helps.
Precision Trolling
The 8th edition has just come out this year and includes the TDD 11 Taildancer which wasn't in the 7th edition.
Next edition might be next year or more - who knows.
It's the bible for this time of the year.

I had a meeting with Mark Romanack a couple of weeks ago. Canadian distribution is in the process of being set up.
In the meantime you can order the book from his website

or send me a PM or email
I can also make available Doc Samson's tapes on sonar interpretation & boat control and if your in the area of Bennett's in Smith Falls they have a few copies.

I just wanted to tell everyone that McQ has the Precision Trolling book 8th Edition - I just received mine yesterday - I hope to hit Quinte next week for another shot at the big walleye...this will really help.
Shoot Bill an email if you need to get the "Bible" for trolling.
