Who woulda thunk it? Fishing with Eye-Tracker on BOQ JAN.7

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Sonar Info

Post by Pepe »

Hi Sheldon

What kind of settings are you using on your lowrance (sensitivity, etc) and do you constantly adjust as your depths change (or do you set them and then leave them)?

As well, your pic: are you saying that for that outing you were only targetting the upper range of the water column?

Final question: in the pic there are "streaks" behind the larger arches - does that indicate aggressive walleye targetting bait?

Thanks.

Hey RJ. I only had my survival suit, and not a suitable jacket. And Jackel was wearing a one piece suit. I was comfortable, I hate being cold but I hate the wind the most. As it turned out a normal cold fall day outfit would have been good enough. Sheldon said as often as he fishes he is used to the cold. I figure that it takes longer to warm up a big body than a thin body   . Seriously though it was a beautiful day and at times when the sun was out it was actually warm. The only time it was cold was when we were running at 55mph and the wind on your exposed areas was a wee bit nippy. Not that we had too many exposed areas

I cant wait to see if we will be able to get out some more before the launches get blocked, hope so.

Oh and those walleye really warm you up when you get em.

Hello Pepe,

I usually have the sensitivity set very high and the ping speed maxed as I like to see everything in the water column. I usually have it set to manual settings to get it just the way I like it, but the Lowrance auto settings work well. I also zoom in on the area I am targeting so I only see the top 40 feet of water when fishing in 130 FOW. In the image you can see how the fish where coming up from the bottom to feed in the top section of the screen and then going back down. You always want to fish above the walleye as they almost always feed up. Often on Quinte, just like the last outing fish running at 40 feet where coming up to feed in the 10 or 15 foot range. Many anglers see the marks at 40 and send down the cranks on down riggers etc. problem is those fish at 40 feet are actively feeding at 15 so they do not strike the baits.

Image

Good electronics make a huge difference when fishing suspended fish as they show what depth they are coming up too and where most of the action is happening. If I do not see yellow/red marks indicating big fish then I move on. I look for these fish on the sonar before I put a line in the water.

Also the line you see running horizontal on the left side of the image is a big fish swimming directly under the boat in the same direction as the boat.

I plan to do some seminars this winter on electronics so I will make sure I cover the set-up and reading of the sonar for trolling open water and suspended targets.

I have to say that the best thing I have bought for my boat was the Lowrance unit I just picked up, what a huge difference. We had no problem finding the fish. Once we had learned from Sheldon what to look for it was easy to recognize the walleye from the baitfish. Before this day if I saw all the arches all over the screen I would have figured they were all kinds of fish but it turns out the black arches are the baitfish ( shad ) and with this unit we learned to look for the colour in the arches and watched as you could actually see the eyes coming up in real time to take the baitfish and go back down. You could also see them get spooked and dive straight down.

It really is cool to just sit and watch the sonar and see where the big fish are and watch them feeding. It shows exactly where you want to set your lures

Thanks again Sheldon for showing us what to look for and explaining how to use my Lowrance. When we headed back out we had no problem finding the school we had been fishing. Too bad we couldnt get them to bite  Oh well we were only out a short time.

I really should get my boat winterized now but I just cant bring myself to do it after this weekend, I may just have to get back out there again if the weather stays warm so I can write another report like this one hopefully.

If not then its only a couple of months to wait. :o

Gotta love springtime in January but ya know its going to be brutally cold in the next week or so, there is no way this can continue and I think us warm weather guys are about to start crying.
