Ice conditions on Dog Lake

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Chicken

I haven't been there in the last week, but I've heard that Hoagan's Bay is good to go. I've seen four wheeler tire marks going to Stump Bay over a week ago. Shipyards should be solid too. It's been really cold out here for the last week and a half.

I'd say give Mark Noble a call. He owns Mark's Bait Shop in Battersea. He is pretty good. He'll tell you what you need to know. 613-353-6799

Lots of ice on Dog, guys have been fishing for well over a week, maybe two weeks it seems to me. Off Hogan's they have not been catching all that many crappies - as has been the case for the past three years or so, according to one lad I know that has fished there a lot.

The splake fishing is going great guns in the main lake and there is lots of ice - eight inches when I was there about a week ago. Catch rates have been spotty. The day I was there I caught nothing but a perch. My two buddies caught one splake each - both keepers at about 1.5 and 2 pounds. Wednesday was a blank for three guys I know who were out. I have seen a bunch of four-wheelers on the ice, but no trucks and I would strongly advise against taking a truck out there yet.

PS) Yes, Mark Noble is an excellent guy to ask, but he is out most of the time right now and his wife Val looks after the shop. Val does not keep up as well with what's happening on the hard water. On Wednesday BTW they were completely sold out of mud minnows and had only medium shiners and larger baits.........

I guess not being able to harvest in Lake Ontario is really hurting him.

I did not think that Mark did get bait from Lake Ontario, thought all his ponds etc were in the back country.........but yes from all I hear the bait industry is having an awful year because of the various restrictions... :(

Thanks for the Dog Lake update guys.

Does anyone have any ice info for Collins Lake? I'm kinda up in the air for this Saturday... giant pike vs. splake :)

Thanks again for the info you have provided.

back to chicken.........

I have not been on Collins, nor do I know anybody who has. BUT there is safe ice everyplace else, and I am not aware of current or springs in Collins Lake, so my guess would be that the ice is just fine. (not at Purdy water access into Little Collins, though - there is current there....)

But maybe take the earlier advice and phone Mark Noble - he might know.

Collins Lake does have good ice - a buddy of mine was there today and a fellow was driving on the ice with a pickup. We plan to be out there tomorrow morning! 8)
