Heres one that gets me riled up!

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Heres one that gets me riled up!

Post by Abraxus »

I am planning a trip to Newfoundland this summer. I was born and raised there until I was 16. I have not been back in 17 years. The part of NFLd I come from is a very rural area with excellent trout fishing.
I grew up snairing rabbits, hunting grouse and partridge, picking berries with my mom, cutting wood for the stove and just generally living the life of a young outdoors lover at young age. I know those woods, ponds, and trails like the back of my own hand.
Now heres what pee pee me off! When I go back this summer, I have every intention of fishing those ponds and walking the trails and barrons of my youth. Although now apparently, If I want to fish in those ponds and woods, by law in NFLD I have to hire a guide for the day! If you are a non-resident of the province this has become the new law for any form of fishing or hunting that takes place on the island!
This pee pee me off! I can understand the Province wanting me to pay a fee that is much higher then that of a local. In fact I would gladly do so, but having to hire a guide so that some dude is not on the freaking whack and drawing on the Provincial boob is just unacceptable! I mean NFLD invented or at least perfected the MAKE WORK PROJECT, but this takes the cake!
Anyhow, I just got the heads up on this today, so I am sort of venting. Although for any person planning on visiting NFLD in near future and have hopes of doing any fishing, I just thought I would make you aware of this situation.

As long as yer not salmon fishin'...

Assuming your trout ponds are not scheduled salmon waters, you should be okay for troutin'. (scroll down toward the bottom to find trout fishin' information.) From what I can tell, salmon fishin' information on the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador's tourism website lists mandatory guides for nonresidents salmon fishin' on scheduled salmon waters. There is no mention of this for trout fishin', so it would seem there's no such requirement.

You probably just need a nonresident licence, I'd give NL Tourism a call to verify if I were you.

Good luck 8)

Wow, at first glance I would have had the same reaction, however I would imagine it's the provinces way of controling and protecting the fish population. From what I've read, as said here, it seems that it applies only to Salmon, but I would definately contact the NFLD department of fisheries to confirm that. If you have a relative there, who you'll be fishing with, then from what I read you may not need to hire a guide.

I suppose it's NFLDs way of making sure people don't come to the rock and take advantage for the great fishing in the area. Seems kinda strange though that it would be mandatory to hire a guide if you're a non-resident. That would almost be like paying homeowners on the shores of a body of water to fish in front of their place. I don't know. :)

This isn't new at all. If you've got family members going with you they can probably be your guides. That's what I always do and haven't had a problem yet. But I've only run into one CO.
