Anyone know what this lure is?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Anyone know what this lure is?

Post by Eli »

Found while walking along riverbank this morning.
I think it looks like something that should be on the set of a batman movie, rather than a tackle box.

Thoughts?

Looks like you might have an interesting rarity there.

This quotation is from http://www.lurelore.com/vibrabat.html
The Vibra Bat is not a really old lure. In the July, 1963 "Fur-Fish-Game" Magazine, an ad appears listing the lure as a "Weird New Sonic Lure...". The ad claims the "New vibrating lure gives loud gurgling, splashing, bubbling sounds as you skitter it along (the) surface of the water!" (sic)

The Vibra Bat came in two sizes, a 1/4 oz. and a 1/2 oz. The smaller size has 2 line tie holes and the larger size, 3. The choice of line tie positions determined the depth the lure would travel.

The bait also has a dual hook rather than a treble. This feature allowed the fisherman to fold the hook back over the mid-section of the lure making the lure 'hook-proof' and therefore let you carry it in your pocket. (Shown in larger size yellow Vibra Bat above).

The markings on these lures vary considerably from nothing to the words "Baby Bat" which appears on both the large and small sizes. This leads one to believe that perhaps this lure was marketed under another name as well.

Thanks for the responses everyone! :)

Wolfe, I don't think I'll be trying my luck with this lure because a. it looks too silly to catch fish and b. if I use it, I might lose it!

The 'amazing vibra bat' will be put away and allowed to appreciate in value.

Wolfman, never, I repeat, never assume a lure won't work due to it's silly or sad appearance. Give it shot man. According to Gord...dates back to 68 :?: :!:

Holy Moses :!: Ya got a classic there, you've gotta get her wet and giver a shot man :!:

I expected better from a guy with sideburns like that....sheesh.

What's the old saying: if you don't use it you loose it! I think I would write this off to a great find u found a great treasure.i have never seen a lure like that and would definetly keep as a long lost treasure! You just never know though; if you are having a really bad day and absolutely nothing is working I would be tempted to give this guy a shot. Let us know what your sucsess is.

Exactly Hitman, I've been given nonsense lures in the past. Those are the, "nothing is working lure days", they amazingly seem to pay off, though you'd never wager they would.

I reckon that would be a good lure for deep-water smallmouth, and possibly walleye. Same basic idea as a blade bait like Heddon Sonic Flash - slightly different geometry of course. But it would be interesteing to give it a try for vertical jigging on a drift over deep smallies.

Hey Clap, can you tell me if there is 3 holes along the middle body of that lure? I had one simulaur to that i'am sure. The 3 holes were for different depths and action for tying on.

Oops i missed Clauses report on it. The larger version did have 3 holes and the smaller with 2 (like yours).

Deff give that a cast into deep water for the fun of it then store away! I remember snapping this lure in all hole positions and it was incredible the pull this lure gave!

Alot of times i couldnt tell if a fish was on, or it was just the lure action. Was that weird to try. Makes me wonder now what happened to mine :!:
