Haven't read it all but suffice to say I'm shocked and my opinion of politicians hasn't improved. It's shocking really.
Perhaps cutting the proposed budget to the Arts, or some other hairbrained, earing in nose wearing, reefer freak, filmaker, given funds to make a film about a week in the life of his cat, Mr. Frisky, might possibly help.
Now, I'm all for the arts, the arts center, our orchestras and tallented artists. However, throwing away $ on artsy fartsy nonsense, so one can say the Arts are supported is quite another.
I say this having heard, many years back the proposed budget for our local arts. Along with that, a small, quick breakdown of some of the supported "creative works."
Included was a grant of over $20,000 to a university student who proposed to make a film about...hold on....get ready for it...
A FILM ABOUT HIMSELF WATCHING A FILM!!!!!!
He was granted it.
Then we wonder what the hell is going on and where the money goes and see the important and truly nec. things, like the MNR, take this possible turn of fate.
It's truly disgusting, in all honesty.

Done!!
I just went through an experience recently with my local MNR office. One of the local area lads here decided to move his ice shack and left his floor, styrafoam and runner skis behind stuck in the ice. I waited 2 weeks before calling the MNR to report this, thinking the person was going to clean up his debris.
The response I received from the CO was that his hands were tied because he was stuck in the office due to the fact that their sleds were still in the main depot on blocks because of cut-backs!!! (this was in Feb. 2007) I ended up calling the Minister's office in Queen's Park and lodged a complaint with the Minister and threatened to go to the news media. The remains of buddies shack was removed by buddy within 4 days of my complaint!!
This is ridiculous!!!

I've read the link and anytime I hear gov't agencies crying for more money I cringe. Every single business in this country has had to tighten their belts because of reduced budgets in recent years and have managed to stay in business. Maybe the MNR should look at better accountability and management practises. I have seen how govt dept's work. When they need something they buy the most expensive one with the most bells and whistles money can buy, they buy new stuff to replace the old stuff every year. Most businesses are more frugal with their money and operate within their means. The gov't never operates within their means.
I will not sign the petition. First, all govt departments are very good at manipulating the statistics to show their budget has been cut. Let's assume though, that they are actually operating with less money. Any funding cuts are taken out on the lowest of staff and throwing more money at the problem is not the answer. You will never see the upper echelon take any cuts in their salaries or office operating budgets. Stop exhorbitant pay hikes for senior MNR staff, stop wasting money on the latest electronic gadgets, ridiculous pet projects (like the muskie tournament BS) and stop pushing paper and passing the buck.
Some CVanadians still have not learned that throwing more taxpayers money at problems has NEVER been the answer. Properly managaing the money they have IS the answer. Look at all the money thrown at health care in the last ten years and what has it got us.....longer wait times with many procedures no longer covered by OHIP.....and it will get worse. More money means higher CEO pay and higher budgets for upper echelon staff, while cutting services, staff and operating budgets at the bottom.
If someone comes out with a petition to lobby for better management practices and accountability I'll sign. I can tell you if a private company was given the MNR budget, not only would they run the MNR properly, they would be able to turn a profit too.
Ya. ya, ya, I know, I know. I'm just a $hit disturber because I disagree with the majority. But I'd rather be that than just jumping on the latest bandwagon because it's the politically correct thing to do.

ChrisS: I agree with your rant about budgets but I still signed the petition because unlike businesses...this is OUR asset we are talking about here. As for budget cuts and all like you said you are 100% right. Health care has been given money but only enough to make the politicians look good. Our Long Term Care is not in good state and as you mentioned of our hospitals they are not as good as they could be. Is it because of frivilous spending...Not in my opinion. I think it is the fact that our population has tripled in the past 25 years or so but our hospitals have not. That puts added pressure on them for sure. As for wait times I still wait my usual 30 min or less for help as I am in a small town that does not see much growth.
mnr
oh in a perfect world. as chris s stated sums up the endless bickering within mnr ranks. a c.o. here was whining he only makes approx 60.000 yearly. the concern was paycheque no resources.. maybe if the c.o. down here were given a course on dealing with people, not being sarcastic every day, and theres plenty of episodes the public would feel better to help. i know this sounds tough and distractfull to this thread. recently the c.o. were given 10 speed bicycles to patrol the waterfront from their superiors. waste you betcha,,, but the bosses dont have gas money or operating funds to catch poachers.it becomes very hard to everyday call mnr offices for sportsmen to scream on infractions. you get tired of it. the ontario goverment could not run a fruit stand let alone our greatest resources the great outdoors. .

MNR
done, sent link to 15 outdoors people.I do agree with chris, but on the other hand if they stopped giving grants to every tom dick and harry that applies without investigating their worth to the community there would be lots of money for hospitals, schools, mnr, ect.

I just put my John Henry on the petition. I can't believe that the powers to be can be so out of date to realize that they should be putting more money into the system instead of trying to make due with a whole lot less. What are they thinking? Would they be able to run a house that way, very unlikely!
