Hook sharpening
Hook sharpening
I have been hearing over and over the preaching about keeping the hooks sharp.
I think it's time to take this advice to heart.
What do you guys use to sharpen your hooks with? Is on tool really better than another?

Hey J
I have used one like this one and I have to say they get just about as sharp as it can get....

These are even better IMO With the right pressure and angle they are awesomely sharp

But a small flat file is pretty good to.
I have a rapala file that has two chainsaw files together with a solid other side with diamond grit, nice handle , it works good.....10$.
Lots to pick from, so try out a few first.

muskie matt,
that rapala file you have, I have the same thing and not sure if I'm using it properly...I guess it's kinda hard to explain through typing, but the way i figure it is supposed to be done is running the point down the groove, against the grain...it seems to sharpen it ok, but I just want to be sure there isin't something I should be doing different
Thanks
WW

Hook Sharpening
I picked up a nifty little tool at the Carp Fishing Show called a "Speedy Sharp". I'm not sure where to get them on the open market, but surely one of our "Retail Partners" would have one or knowledge of where to get one.

I think the biggest problem of most folks, (I know I was guilty!!
), is understanding the difference between "sharpening", and "honing". My "Speedy Sharp" came with an instruction sheet and it's quite easy to see how the two techniques differ and how "honing" will add to the longevity of any sharp edge.
I don't know, they may have a Website, but if not their address is Speedy Sharp, 1410 East Pine Ave., Meridian, Idaho, 83642 U.S.A.
Hope this helps someone!!

Re: Hook Sharpening
I picked one up as well myself and all I can say is WOW. These little gems do a fantastic job, not just on hooks, but on every blade I own. I came home after the show and sharpened everying I could possibly find to sharpen......even my trolling motor blade. Cuts through anything now.
I believe I still have a card. Let me check and see if I can get some more information on them.

Reasonable cost and sounds very effective from our anglers testimonies. I've always used a sharpening stone but after reading this thread I'm feeling awkward after Cybers post wondering if I've been actually sharpening or "honing", will have to research that as I'm unsure but am pretty well assured it's not as effective as sharpening.
Thanks for adding more confusion to my already confused world J. I shall begin planning revenge.

Kpin...Honing means maintaining your blade. It helps put your blade back into alignment to give you the best performance possible until such time as your knife needs sharpening.
Sharpening actually shaves metal off of the blade to put a fresh edge on the knife. If you hone regularly, you cut down on the need for sharpening, which extends the life of your knife.
I have used the Speedy Sharp for all my knives but not fish hooks.. it does an excellent sharpening job and you can actually see the bits of steel removed from your knife. Speedy Sharp has two functions....honing and sharpening.
