Hi Everyone
This summer I have been spending more time fishing for bass than walleye. I have been learning a few things and catching more bass. Because I spent so much time flyfishing in the past, my main interest with bass is topwater fishing. I normally fish rocky shoals and points for smallies. I do not spend much time in the weeds.
For surface lures I normally use jitterbugs or hebdon crazy crawlers. These seem to work well and more importantly are easy to fish. What are some other topwater lures that work well and are easy to use? I have tried scumfrogs and hula-poppers but cant seem to get the action to look realistic. The action seems to be too jerky, I assume that is because they are more designed to fish in the lillypads.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers
Steve
surface lures
I first learned to fish on poppers. It's a quick compact little wrist flick that works...with a pause...and then a pause...and then a twitch. Or if the fish are more aggressive you can almost do a little dance on the water with a big splash followed by a twitch and smaller flicks which look more like a fish flop. If it looks and sounds good to you, like a real fish....they go for it. I found that not only would bass hit this but walleye too. It's good for shore fishing or fishing at the dock when others are around. Also works great near the weeds.
Also I fish a number of lures meant for other purposes on the surface. Usually that requires a fast action to keep it near the surface. Lots of fun to see surface strikes.

My favorites in order are
1 giant abagast jidder bugs,
2 Storm Chug bugs. both the small and large.
3 The spitting image. ( walk the dog action) its actually a saltwater lure. Ones with red eyes seem to work better for some reason.
4 10" black worm, not weighted and just twitched close to the surface.
I only fish top water for bass, and these are the ones i prefer to use.
