BOQ Kayak Fishing trip Nov 16-18

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

If any are interested to join we are going to the BOQ Nov 16-17-18. We have booked at the Parklane Motel for $50.00/night/2 anglers Friday and Saturday night.

Looking at trying the low light bite out of the yaks, sleep during the day. With multiple vehicles we can put in and come out in different locations. Time to try some Yozuri's and a couple choice Lucky Crafts along with my standard bottom bouncing using hand tied spinner rigs.

We have had great fishing on Quinte during hardwater, time to sample some open water action.

Time to go crack some PBs for some Hawg 'Eyes. :D

For more info you can also check out http://yakfishinternational.com/forums/ ... ,51.0.html

Hope to see some Yak Fishermen/women in the Bay.

Cheers

Yakkin

Post by Seaweed »

Just one strong word of advice.

Be sure to have a well lit yak if you are out on the Bay after dark.

It is hard enough spotting poorly lit tinbangers on the bay at night ... I would think that I would be over a yak before I even knew it was there if I was moving around the bay in my boat.

Honestly guys.... can you possibly think that it is safe to be on the bay in November in a freakin yak.....

Best of luck to you.

Good heads up on being well lit up. The boats have nav lights bow and stern along with reflective 3M tape on paddles and along the hull. Stands out like a Christmas Tree.

Seat on Top kayaks are quite different from traditional Seat inside boats, much more stable and a breeze to re-enter.

I did a re-entry trial on my wife's boat, quite comfortable in Pink  . The pause getting back in was a snagged decking rope on my PFD. The bigger the yak the easier the re-entry.

I have done quite a bit of cold water paddling and like ice fishing you dress for the occassion and lots of common sense. Weather conditions and forecasts dictate the days activities.

Seaweed,

I follow all the rules and regs on the water. You are right about mixing yaks and power boats.. My biggest concern when kayaking is the thing I can't control, the action of another boater. I honestly say fishing the Rideau in daylight in a paddle craft can be challenging. Not due to our action but the actions of others. As a kayaker I only ask for the same consideration as other boaters.

Now is it safe? With a tournament happening the same weekend, it changes the picture a little. Being out at night is one thing. Being out at night in the middle of a high traffic tournament is another.

You ask a very good question but IMHO responsibility rests with all us not just the yakers.

Tittowoody, the trip sounds like a lot of fun. Not yet sure if I can make it down.

Hopefully there isn't any of those large Lakers or Ocean going vesseles heading toor from one of those cement plants in the early morning because when I was there in broad daylight, if you were in the middle of the Bay and had one of those guys go by I am sure they would have a very difficult time seeing you. From the speed I saw it go by I am sure they certainly wouldn't be able to stop. Just a heads up and an obsevation I noticed when I was out there. If you do go, let us know how you do.

Had some typical November weather.... quite cold. Here are some frosty yaks Saturday morning at the George Street launch in Belleville. Definately a Kokatat drysuit morning. :D

Image

Took awhile to warm up, a few hours later still had some frost on.

Image

Managed some Perch and a small Walleye around the Bay Bridge, very quiet for the other boats also.

Went back in for lunch and also had a visit at Carra Sports, meet up with Sam the owner, great guy. He mentioned that down in Picton Harbour would be a great place to try, especially at night.

Marking lots of baitfish balls along with nice arches but no takers. Missed one nice hit and after that no luck. We got off the water around 10 PM and where looking for an early morning start the next morning in the same location.

Temps dropped quite a bit during the night and to are surprise we where greeted with -8 C. To cold to go fishing for these old bones. Turned out I would have had trouble getting my rods out of the hatch. I forgot my transducer gel and used some water instead, which I neglected to drain out.

Image

We saw some nice fish come in out of a fishing charter and a few boaters had the odd fish. A great body of water but it is quite busy, even at night. Happyhooker mentioned that from his boating experiences, even with our stern light some of the bigger boats would have trouble seeing our small signature. Will have more lighting accessories for a future outing.

Cheers
