Local Fishing Stores

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Local Fishing Stores

Post by TrollingThunder »

First post, however, I've been a big fan of the site for quite some time, great posts and conversations.

I've been doing alot of looking around for local tackle shops the ones I know of are:

LeBarons - heard enough about them on here haha, but hard to beat prices

Paddle Tales - absolutely amazing service, bought some St. Croix rods there for musky fishing this year, and was blown away by the knowledge as well as the bbq in Feb and quantum gear

Bits and Baits - some great musky stuff that I havent found anywhere else

Manotick Bait Shop where I get all my live bait

Sports Action

These are the only ones I am familiar with, I live in Ottawa south area and if anyone knows of any other local places, info would be great (within 1/1.5 hours....kingston is too far haha). I will take service over prices anyday is my opinion so I love the local tackle shops that will go the extra mile in service, or willing to just talk about fishing

Just go to Canadian Tire or Wal-mart! They've got everything you need and they're all over the place.

Welcome to the Fish-Hawk family.
If you are down in the Smiths Falls area stop @ Bennett's Bait & Tackle. We usually hit Bennett's on our way up to fish the Big Rideau.

Oh, really? The last few times I've been there they've had a fairly complete fishing section. A little bit of everything for some fishing in the ottawa area. Maybe not for trout fishing but for everything else. They had good brand crankbaits, spinnerbaits, plastics, rods/reels, line etc. Everything you could need... even worms were for sale. The other stores have the service though... no doubt about that. They'll also have a better selection too but that doesn't mean CT has a terrible one.

CT's a good choice too if you're not near lebaron's or sportsaction. I wouldn't go to those places anyway unless you're looking for something specific... maybe some musky lures.

Of course, if you're wanting to buy endless amounts of lures, CT isn't the best choice. But, for a tacklebox full of good lures, CT will have them. A couple of Rapala cranks, a couple of BlueFox spinners, a few Mepps spinners, a few Berkley plastics, a few spinnerbaits, Hula Poppers jiggs, stingers, some good line, (good reels there, Shimano, Daiwa)... lots of good stuff. Lots of well-known brand stuff there that will catch fish.

The other places are mostly out of town... better to go there than lebaron's.

Norris' in Westport is really good too...

I'd be inclined to agree about CT and WM; although they are everywhere I have been to many of them, and fishing is definately not their game. Besides the many arguements that anyone could raise, personally I would rather give my business to any of the local independent fishing shops than a commercial giant such as CT or WM. Theres something about local tackle shops that is much more appealing to me.

Yeah, me too, but there aren't any local stores worth going to in Ottawa. All those smaller stores aren't local. Lebaron's is terrible and its not worth giving them business. Sports Action is equally undesireable. So, unless you want to travel, you're stuck with CT and wal-mart, two stores that have a basic selection of the most popular lures. There you can stock your tackle box with great lures that will catch you many fish.

IMO, it's a matter of want and need....CT and WM prolly have just about everything you need to catch some fish. But if you want to have out-of-the-ordinary stuff you have to go elsewhere. Like, I wanted non-lead sinkers...I checked CT because they're close by and I have CT money, but they didn't have them. I also wanted a quality baitcasting setup.....didn't even bother with CT or WM.

Also, if you have any questions about fishing equipment or technique....CT or WM? Forget it.

Another opinion: WM really is a massive organization, employing hundreds of thousands of people across the world. They're also local mom&pop store killler putting fear in the eyes of any independent shop that sees them as new neighbours. CT -- a small fish compared to WM. And it's canadian. I'll shop CT over WM if I can.

Also, FishingFever...welcome to the site! :D

I know Paddletales and Baitcasters can deliver or ship product to you i the city.
Here is a list of stores that have great stock and even better service. I don't shop anywhere else.

Paddletales (Winchester)
Bennet's (Smiths Falls)
Baitcasters (Mississippi Lake)
Norris (Westport)
Dad's Gone Fishing (Brockville)
Bits and Bits (Stittsville)
The prices in these stores are in line with others and the information and service you will get far exceeds the couple pennies you MIGHT save.

CT and WM don't usually have the selection of high end tackle or soft plastics that I'm interested in. LeBaron's and Sports Action sell decent stuff at hard to beat prices. Bait Casters at Mississippi Lake has a great selection of soft plastics they now carry Kistler rods and Paddle Tails in Winchester has a great selection of Rods.
Don't forget the Canadian dollar makes shopping on ebay, Bass Pro and Cabela's more worthwhile.

Thwe's a sale on now at CT so now's probably the best time to go. They have everything you could need for a summer of kick-butt fishing around Ottawa!!!
