Charleston Lake report update

Post by prcab »

I just wanted to post a fishing report on Charleston Lake after spending a great 2 week vacation with my wife and two of my three daughters. We had another great fishing trip with many bass, pike and lake trout caught. (and many lost, but you will have to ask my wife about that). We started out catching bass both smallmouth and largemouth. They wanted to hit many different types of lures, the girls using alot of soft plastics rigges wacky style and I was throwing everything from spinnerbaits to rattle traps to top water hardware. Although we did not boat any 5 lb fish as we did last year we did put a great deal of 3lb plus fish in the boat and a few in the 4 lb catagory, also my middle daughter caught a huge 1lb 4 oz rock bass. All fish were weighed on a digital scale as we needed to be sure that all the ladies outfished dad, and they did for the most part. But as always it was great knowing that I was the one who introduced them to fishing and that all of my girls can outfish most young men in their age group. As for my wife last year we worked on her casting which she has down and this year was spent working on her hook set which improved greatly, although she did manage to long distance release a few very nice bass and lake trout, but she had a great time anyway. I should say we stayed on Hogback island in a beautiful cottage that wolfe indirectly put me in touch with last year (thanks wolfe!) and had our best fishing all withing a three minute ride in our 20ft center console, although we did spend a few days exploring the entire lake. If you need to know exact locations pm me and I will try and help you out. This year was a first for lake trout for us and they were cooperative. We do not have down riggers but used my electric 101 to troll spinners weighted and managed to pound the fish we marked in the 15-20 ft range. I'm sure this changes as the lake continues to warm but the water temps were around 74f. We all managed to catch our fair share of laketrout with many in the 3lb range and the biggest being 7lbs. Half of these fish were native with the others fin clipped. The larger fish were the fin clipped ones. We did keep a few fish (bass) for a shore dinner and all the other were released back into the lake for others to enjoy. I can say that the only upsetting part of the two weeks was leaving the lake today. This is one lake if you haven't fished you must try as my youngest daughter (17) says there is quantity and quality here. Below are just a few photos for those interested
