Boat Insurance

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

:D Insurance, strike fear into the mortal heart of man don't it.

:) I went with a company called Direct Protect, they're insuring me for $72 per year. They also insure my home and car.

14 Foot Aluminum Battleship 8)
15 horse fourstroke ($4 in gas for a 22 mile trip)
Trailer

The thing to watch laddies, is that you may get the 20 questions when you ask for insurance. How old is your house, have you made any renovations yada yada... They made me jump through some hoops to get the good rate.

My boat is under my house insurance...(seperate rider) It covers the boat motor and trailer....not the electronics , not the down riggers and not the new 9.9 and according to my agent I have to list tackle seperate :x .....I find $1000,00 absurd....but because the boat is finaced I have to have it...I would not run with out it, but most boat owners run their boats on weekends and on their two week holiday...normal boating season ...4 months(not ours) but on the norm...4 months you break that down and you find the normal boater runs approx 26 days ...$38.50 a day, Not real accurate because it is based on a 24 hour day     :? Well thats the break down what I would be paying as a normal boater....I'm not a normal boater ....but they don't know that !! (well maybe they know now) Do you not find this a little steep!!!!!!!!!There has to be a better rate for rec boaters This a big rip off..If I had claimed the skeg I broke off last fall  My insurance would go up 38% for the next three years(according to my agent)...IT'S NOT RIGHT

BIG-PEED OFF O(PHIL)<*!!!!><

The other thing you have to remember is it's insured for when you'r enot using it.. that tree that falls on it.. the guy that walks into your yard climbs on your boat falls off it and claims against you for personal injury... uggghhh weird stuff happens and it's always when you least expect it...

I had all my carp gear stolen in england 10 years ago and it took 4 months to get it sorted out... i didn't do too bad but it was 4 months missed fishing when the lake was at it's prime... they want receipts.. photos.. everything to prove you had what you say you had.. even a full list of items... i don't imagine anyone here could list everythign they have down to that last $10 lure !

I just hope that the insurance company plays fair the day you do have to claim after years of paying your premiums... i think we should all make a point of photographing everything we have... i know it's something we all say we're going to do but never seem to get around to.

Wouldn't your tackle, rods etc... count against your house insurance? Just like when your car gets broken into and they steal your laptop and digital camera. This claim would have to go against your house insurance.

As far as the boat, my house insurance includes a boat up to 25HP to am maximum of $2500. Which is fine by me cause my boat is worth less than that.

Just a couple of ideas.

Boat insurance

Yeah.... insurance sucks.

Until you need it and like John pointed out .... check the fine print. Have I done that yet?

You know it is stuff like this that can take the fun out of fishing for sure.... maybe I need to retreat to the lawn chair by the river again.... I don`t think so.... I haven`t been told anything about increases due to tounament participation.... but thanks for the heads up.

Big-O .... what can I say? you can get a better deal... it is just the hassle to shop again.... such fun. But think of all the toys you could buy with that extra $$$$

Seaweed make sure you check that one out. The past insurance company I was with drop'd my policy because they looked at tournament fishing as "high risk" , business (you make money fishing tourneys) and racing because of the blast-offs. :(

I was just reading thru some old posts ,when I came across this thread!

I was going to make a new suject on insurance...but since this one is here I'll just add to it!!

First of all M.T. RJ you seem to have pretty good rates...I'M paying $926.00 per year  :( Which I believe is way to much...three times the amount for my house and out buildings!! Is there a company that just deals in boats , snowmobiles ,4 wheelers....ect.i have to believe that there is a cheaper rate out there some where....I am in the process of talking to Gray Power....any other suggestions

Hi Big O yes there are several and some that specialize in Bass boats, a boats used by tournament guys. MT and RJ if either of you plan to fish tournaments I would double check my policy just out of curiosity what amount are you covered for 1 million or more??? and what is your deductable??one thing for sure tell your agent what you plan to do, what province[s] you plan to fish in, what kind of speed you get out old betsy etc. etc. Honesty and nothing but the truth when you deal with insurance
folks.
GO FLAMES GO Thanks a whole bunch BOBBER :D :D you have my word

It really bothers me what you guys are paying I think it is ridiculous, I have a 30' sailboat that insures for $350 a yr. The boat may only have a maximum speed of 8 mph but she weighs 12,000 lbs if I run over a small boat in the middle of the night I wouldn't even know I hit it. As a sailor I have taken all the courses, boating, seamanship etc. this may make me a better navigator than the average boater but in no way does it make a safer boater! The insurance companies are judging you as if you are running sea doos not as educated boaters. I would be asking what courses do I need to reduce my costs? As a side bar my 30' boat will tow 2 12' aluminiums sleeps 5 and uses less than $100 worth of deisel fuel in a season, I run 2 down riggers off the stern and tow a 11' dinghy that is also down rig equipped. I go nowhere fast but it is cheap and serves as a great home base in places like the Moon or Bad and French river areas. The boat cost me 25K, never regretted a dime I paid for her.

Believe me when I say I am not particularly happy about the rate I am paying. But let me also assure you of this, the people who are writing my policy don't have a frickin clue about anything to do with boats, motorcycles, RVs, ATVs, etc. They barely know cars and trucks. In my case I am more or less covering the replacement cost of my boat and motor (and as Big-O notes, none of the contents or electronics - would have had to provide models and serial numbers for each). I also have a million liability in case I run over a sea-dooer.

I like the idea of an insurance break if you take a safe boat course. Kind of like Young Drivers of Canada. But the insurance industry is slow to adopt such programs and give me back any of my hard earned money.

I know my insurance company gives you a 5% discount if you have more than 3 years experience.. although it's kinda weird they never asked for proof.. go figure :!:
