Go Big or Go Home w/pics

Post by landshark »

I had never fished quinte but it was an itch that I needed to scratch. I posted late last week that I wanted to come up from Central NY and give it a whirl. Big A (Arnaldo) told me to meet him at 7 am saturday morning because 3 of us were going to fish a little 2day touramnet that JB's Fishing Depot put on. I left my place at 2 am and met him and Marty Coo (Mike) at the launch area in Picton. We headed out and set up our program. I fished nothing but 900 series Reef Runners off of one side of the boat. The other side we ran some of Quintes more popular baits including Dr Death. The format of the tournament was 1 fish per boat per day and the overall winner of combined weight for the 2 days. It laso paid 3 spots each day. We caught some fish on Quintes favorites but At the end of day 1, we weighed our biggest fish which was caught on a Reef Runner 900 custom color from www.xtackle.com It weighed 12.02 which was good enough for 3rd for the day. The 2nd place fish was 12.66 and the leader after day 1 was beauty 13.14lbs.
We knew we needed a big fish for day 2 to have a chance. The 3 of us decided we were going to drag those 900's in hope of at least 1 fish knowing that it would be a good one since the bait is so big. If you have never seen one check out this size chart to give you some idead how big these baits are. 800s are what most normally run. http://www.xtackle.com/800seriesreefrun ... 1-1-3.aspx
We boated more fish on Sunday with our biggest again hitting the RR 900 custom Purple BN. It was pulled 200 feet behind an inline board with 10lb straight mono. We headed toward the weigh in around 2:30 pm. Our biggest fish was slightly smaller than our fish the day before at 11.94lbs. It was only the 4th or 5th best fish of the day. One boat brought an absolute monster to scale at 14.2. Our fish did however give us the total overall win for combined weight. I met alot of great people and fisherman. Special thanks to Marty Coo and Big A and the great folks at JB's Fishing Depot. The tournament was fun. The last pic is the 14.2 hawg.

It was a great weekend outing!!!! I couldn't ask for better people in my boat. landshark and Martycoo and myself seemed to work well together as a team. I hope that we can continue as a team at this event for years to come. Everyone that participated at the outing (about 24 boats) were first class people. Special thanks to Brian from JB's Fishing Depot for letting us join the event.

Great report Michael and I hope that I get the opportunity to come up to you neck of the woods and experience some of the amazing outings you told us this weekend.

A true testament to what Quinte has to offer!

What happened to the fish after being dragged back to Picton?

And that number was?....miniscule is my bet...

No offence to you at all Landshark....and I by no means mean to derail your report.....BUT...

How many boats were in this derby?....so double that number of fish being brought to the ramp each day....of the biggest fish caught in each boat.....never mind the ones who are caught earlier thrown in a livewell then chucked as they just got culled.....

Anyone who has fished Quinte knows these fish are in a fragile state when brought up from even 30 feet....then thrown in a livewell for potentially hours....it's a recipe for a dumpster full of dead 10 pound plus eyes....

Yes I know the commercial fishery is tough on the eyes....as well as the native issue in the Spring....but then how can we as sport-fishers hop on our soapboxes to criticize their actions when this style of tournament goes on....

One thing that I will add is last winter one of the local shops put on a walleye tournament....it was for the SMALLEST fish caught....they asked people to return the larger fish and have some fun with this style derby....the locals really appreciated it....after all...we are all playing in their neighbourhood....

Off my soapbox....

I understand what you're saying RJ, but I've seen a lot of locals keep 10 - 12lbers on a regular basis. I'm sure there are more than 200 locals that fish Quinte at least twice a month, and pretty sure they go home with their limits. In fact I know that some locals hit a certain spot (don't want to bring attention to) that they are there at least 3 times a week and take home their limit every time.

Please don't take this the wrong way RJ, I'm not trying to attack your reply to landshark at all. I'm sure that a lot of the locals appreciate the big eyes return well to the waters, but in reality the locals are just to blame as well.

= I mean to derail your report ,, after all if you didn't mean to derail his report then why did you go ahead and do so :? :? :?
Bass Addict...

it's an open forum, everyone is free to speak their mind. At the same time it's nice to see anglers that like to keep the fisheries strong, but maybe RJ could have gone about it a different direction.
