Been pondering this....

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

You think the NCC would be upset if I walked out into the middle of the canal skate-way and drilled a couple holes and set up camp for the day?

Yes. You will likely get a ticket and get kicked off. Even if you are in an area that isn't plowed.......

To save yourself some trouble be sure to go when they are watering it and just follow the guys, they'll drill the holes for you.
When hell freezes over, I'll be there icefishing!!!

First, I don't plan on fishing there, it was just a passing thought I had....

You will likely get a ticket and get kicked off. Even if you are in an area that isn't plowed.......
But in all reality, what can they ticket me for? Fishing in season with a licence? Tresspassing on public property?

My passing thought went something like this...

I was fishing...a crowd gathers. They try to kick me off. Police are called. Media shows up. Then I land a monster record breaking fish with everyone around cheering. I leave a hero and get my own place on the 6pm news. My name becomes synonymous with legend.

No?

Interesting thread....

I think it's safe to assume that if you bored a hole in the skateway it's safe to say that you'd get hauled off the ice and fined.

Now if you were to bore a hole in a uncleared section of Dow's Lake away from the skateway, this would be in interesting situation given that no restrictions are posted and you're not creating a risk to any of the skaters. You'd still most likely get ticket, but it would probably get thrown out in court.

Some of you say I will get a ticket. But in all reality, a ticket for what? Fishing in season? With a licence? On public property open to the public?

They don't ticket people in the summer.

And Jamsers: I just re-introduced myself to the strong Quebec beer that evening, mmmm, 9%.

The way it was explained to me (from someone who has gotten a few tickets on dows lake ice) is that once it freezes, it becomes NCC property, just like land.

But just for fun maybe you should try to play out your idea and see what happens

Not being from Ottawa (The City That Fun Forgot).........

How and under what authority could an Ontario citizen be fined (or forced to leave) for conducting a legal activity in a public place????? :?:

I am not talking about holes in the skating rink, that would probably constitute mischief, but on the lake where there is NOT a cleared place for skaters (like the skaters already have ten miles or something, do they not?)

What kind of jack-booted brown shirts do they have down in Oddawa anyways???? (NOT on Parliament Hill, we know the answer to that question). You guys are all kidding, right? :?

dows lake

In a nut shell canal is man made, maintained by NCC,once frozen=private property,as stated to us by RCMP
We ran into hassles w/ the contracted groomers a few years back, said ice fishing was the cause of his trucks going thru the ice
have never been fined nor kicked off, never drilled near areas they use for skating or the hockey rink or the slegh area
fill your holes in and mark them w/ orange paint to identifie a potential danger after your done
It is for winter recreation, ice fishing is winter recreation
