Question on ATV
CPrince,
There are alot of places to get Crown land maps.
I know the MNR in Kemptville has them, Pathfinder in CP probably has them too!
Not sure about the map store in Downtown Ottawa but I am sure they can get it.
As I have said. OFSC trails are always clearly marked and groomed. So if your up in Bogie or somewhere looking for a trout hole most are not sled trails. Eventhough you may see sled tracks.

Jamsers you seem to have good knowledge of this topic here is one up for your opinion. a friend of mine just brought a tracked Argo. could this be classisfied as a snowmobile and be fitted with a pass? I think the trail speed limit is only 60 kph anyway and EVERYONE obeys that
I'm just being curious I am not looking to put you on the spot.

That is a very good question.
The answer is no.
ATV's, Argos do not come under the class of Motorized Snowmachine so they do not fit the definition of the Ontario Ministry's Motorized Snowmachine Act.
After reading your question I put in a call to the OFSC to confirm this.
Even with a permit and even with it being tracked you cannot use it on the trails.
Even the double-tracked snowmachine made by Ski-doo that has an enclosed cockpit cannot be used on OFSC trails!
Also, getting back to this tid-bit that was posted by TMH and earleir by someone else.
According to the act. If you have a fishing license and you are going ice fishing or hunting and the ONLY safe accesible route to where you are going is on a portion of OFSC track on CROWN or other PUBLIC land, may you use an ATV, Argo etc....
But be careful..before you go waving that piece of info in front of the "Trail Cops" face be damn 100% sure that it is the ONLY safe route...and not the ONLY SAFE ROUTE YOU know of....

Jamsers/Todd B. ..I just got off the phone with an MNR Sr. Fish & Wildlife Technical Specialist who re-assured me that I can access ANY of the lakes that are on Crown Land with an ATV at ANY time of the year providing that I am not using private property to do so....OFSC has MNR's permission to use crown land to route their snowmobile trails through but cannot stop a person with a vaild fishing license from accessing lakes using the regular access trails to the lake....Jamsers wrote:That is a very good question.
I wouldn't know!
My best answer (in lieu) is for your friend to call his local snowmobile chapter. The number can be found on the OFSC website.
As it is tracked it wouldn't do the damage to the groomed trails the ATV's do. As long as he had a pass, I don't see why they would object.
Is he planning to ride the trails with it or use it to access fishing holes?
And the speed limit is 50 km/h and we all follow it....![]()
I will send both of you the name and number of the gentleman I spoke with in order for you to hear it with your own ears

I encourage both of you to call him and as a courtesy to other F-H members who have been following this thread, post a reply on what was said!!

Ummm,
Steve. Never did Todd nor I say you couldn't. In fact read my post after I called the OFSC. Never can they tell you at any time of year you can't use the public or crown lands. I never said you couldn't.
The debate has never been about this. Its been about using private land.
In your case you are correct and I never argued that. All I am saying is be 100% sure you are indeed on Crown/Public land.

RJ,
My neighbor was stopped and harrased on Sunday by the trail cops for not having his pass displayed on his machine.
Eventhough he had it in his pocket, he bought it that morning.
He didn't put it on the sled as the do not adhere properly in the cold.
The fines can be steep. Its all dependent.
To fight it is a day in court. Its a fine and can be a trespassing charge if on private land.
However, you CAN go on Crown/Public land with an ATV so long as you have the requisite insurance, ownership, outdoors license. The OFSC cannot stop you from using a sled trail.
But, if your aggressive (as some people are) you'll find they'll be a jerk right back....
You catch more flies with honey.....
*sigh*
My whole point from the start is yes you can use your argo, atv etc to go ice fishing and can use a trail on Public/Crown land....
All you need to do is ensure that the trail you are on is indeed Crown.
As I mentioned ALL OFSC TRAILS are CLEARLY marked. So if you don't see the OFSC sign, you are in Crown land areas..chances are you are safe.
But as 90% of Ontario land is PRIVATELY owned..you'd want to be 110% sure you are on a Crown/Public trail.

Jamsers...LOL....if you go back to the 1st page, question by icemanstan was:Jamsers wrote:Ummm,

Where in Stan's question does he refer to using an ATV on private land??? It was a generic question which you replied to as follows:Icemanstan wrote:Law of riding on a Skidoo trials
Can anyone ride a sikdoo trial with a ATV
I was told yes as long as you have in your procession an ice-finhing rod on your ATV............ this is the first i hear of.
The fellow live in Hurst Ontario
This would open-up many lake to me.
I will be calling the MNR Monday to find out I just wanted to see if anyone knew of this.
Thanks
Stan
Your reply in bold is to the point and in your own words "bottom line" .....it makes no reference to Crown/public land or private property. So it is deceiving and therefore started this great discussion!!......Jamsers wrote:No ATV's are allowed on OSFC trails in Ontario.....PERIOD.
Your on it with an ATV you get fined. Bottom line.
I'd find another area to fish personally. A few fish isn't worth the fine.
I'm glad that it's now clear, as to what ATV owner's can do as far as using OFSC trails on CROWN LAND or PUBLIC LAND to get to their fav trout lakes in the winter
