truck through the ice at Petrie???

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

truck through the ice at Petrie???

Post by Yannick Loranger »

I drove by Petrie this afternoon and noticed something that looked like a truck cab sticking out of the ice with yellow caution tape all around. It's near the huts so I figure there's plenty of ice, doesn't make sense that anything would go through, but something did. Anyone know?

Problem is that many leave the 'think' aspect at home....

A truck did go through this morning. The 2 guys did not even get a soaker.
They went through 200 feet away from the furthest shack's on the ice closest to the house on the cliff. The problem was they decided to go off the road and look for a new place to fish. There was a reason there where no tracks in the snow.

I spent the morning dealing with these 2 gentlemen and I am happy nobody got hurt. I personly notified the mnr , fisheries and ocean as well as the police. They are assesing the best way to remove the truck.

If you are new to a area test the ice before you go exploring!

Anyone know what the ice thickness was where the truck went through or in that general area?

Is it in any way possible for the people of the Petrie shack to throw a few signs out there?

Maybe toss a few... just a few... out there? Is that too much to ask? Not everybody is in the know...

Rope off the dangerous areas and put up lots of signs... C'mon Now!!!

No person that I know will mark where an unsafe area is, because the implication would become, if the ice is unmarked, it must be safe.

As others said, don't go unless YOU test the ice. YOU, NOT OTHERS, are responsible to determine where is safe and where is not safe for YOU to drive.

The ice where he went through was about 6" and snowcovered. I will also note that where he went through is a spot that is not maintained whatsoever.

As for roping off area's.? This was way out of the bay. The point is if you dont know you should check.

I was just suggesting that in area like Petrie we might know where the most dangerous areas are.

I think this is quite an important suggestion...

The most dangerous areas of Petrie should be marked off...

And I absolutely think that the gents that run a business there should be the ones to do it.

Their refusal to do so is seriously quite confusing...

One word why they wont..... LIABILITY!

If you're not familiar with the ice...then stick to 'maintained' or distinct paths....and if you wish to fish elsewhere just walk!! once you get to where you want to fish you will see how much ice you have and then make the call if you wish to bring your vehicle over.....like it's not rocket science!!!

Joe are you familiar with the area? I know what you are saying..... but I don't think that is really feasible at all...... they'd need thousands of yards of yellow tape.......
