I've caught thousands of pike without a leader while jigging for walleye, and also lost many to their teeth. Having a leader isn't an absolute requirement, you'll still land far more fish than you lose.

However after losing 2-3 $5 lures, that .50 cent leader starts to look like a pretty good idea. If you're worried about spooking the fish (almost an oxymoron wrt pike) you can get the black low-vis ones for about $1.00.
If I was specifically fishing pike, I use leaders. Most of the time I don't bother because I'm more concerned with walleye and pike are the consolation prize.

:) Marcus, you couldn't and wouldn't have won any Pike contest with that fish! Clearly it was a different species altogether, a Splike.

:P Btw. did it walk ashore after you caught it?
