Lightning Rod whoes

My brand new Lightning Rod snapped today on only it's second usage (I've had it for a week) and I'm wondering whether it is legit to bring it back to the place of purchase to seek an exchange.

Here's the scenario: I was using an intermitent return with a Husky Jerk on the Rideau and the lip must have caught on a rock - thinking it was a strike (I use power-pro) I set the hook, at which time the rod snapped just above the start of the second piece. Argh.

I'm curious as to what you guys would do if you were in my shoes, or if you've had any success having a potentially defective rod replaced.

I usually take it back to the retail store if it broke in the first couple of weeks and see if they can help me out. After a month I usually deal with the rod manufacture company.

Hope it was wally world or crappy tire where you left your cash. Hey did you use one of those credit cards that etend your warranty, maybe they would replace your lightning. I have numerous 2 piece lightnings, and I use power pro, and I set hooks on lots of things beside fish. I say you had a manufacturers defect :wink: , and it should be replaced immediatlely :evil:

I have heard they are good with their warranty,so don't waste time and take it back."THEY" say if anything is going to happen to a rod it will happen in the first few uses and that is they we warranty it only for one year.so there you are,claim your warranty.

Thanks for your replies.....the place of purchase exchanged it for me with no problems at all (other than a cautionary warning about using power pro with a med-light rod).

Hope the rain stays away this weekend.

That's one thing I really love about my local independant tackle shop. He always guarentee's all his gear and will replace it on the spot with no hassels if there is a problem.

The last rod I bought there he basically tried to destroy it to show me how strong it was. Salmon experienced the same demenstration when he bought his. I think the independants are more in touch with the merchandise reps and have less hassel in returning damaged gear.

The best advise i can give on this subject is.....Buy from ED He will never steer you wrong...and give you a great deal....and best part you are talking to the OWNER not a $5.00 hour clerk!!!! The short drive to Winchester is worth it.....Oh yea if you go, ask him to try out that $800.00 reel :shock: :shock: :shock:

Pure Fishing in Portage la Prairie, MB will replace it on warranty, the time frame can be a problem.

They replaced my broken Mitchell Fulcrum rod this past spring. The rod was 6 - years old, JUst mail to them(after a phone call) and they sent me a new Professional Lightening rod for under $40.00.

I was pleased with their service and their promptness.

Glad to hear your retailer fixed your problem.

I bought a Berkely Series One 4 years ago and broke it after a couple of weeks, sent it back and broke the replacment they sent me as well. They replaced it and I have had no problems since. One thing about broken rods is they really can tell on some rods if it has been broken and it is not a defect. If the break is clean it is most definitely a defective rod and they should replace it no questions asked. Berkely is really good in that respect.

I've found Shimano and Shakespeare to be awesome with their returns and exchanges. My Shimano reel went absolutely wonky on me last summer, started making funny noises. Sent it back, within 3 weeks, I had a brand spankin' new Shimano reel, on the house, shipping paid and everything. My dad's Ugly Stik broke in half, they sent him a new one, along with a hat and a gear bag. Very good companies.

From what I've heard about power pro, you really don't need to set the hookvery hard , ,just aflick of the wrist will do. There's only 2 reasons I can come up with that would break a rod on a hookset. Either the rods defective (not likely) or your drag was was set WAY to tight. I've landed 20 lb pike with my lightning rod and have never had any problems.

Lightning Rods are good rods, but all rods are prone to...

I bought one from LeBaron last spring and snapped the tip off it as well when my lure got hooked to the tip during the cast. I let the rod sit in the closet until fall when I finally sent it off to Winnipeg along with one of my defaulty Fenwick rods.

They sent me back two brand new rods for the cost of shipping.

The one piece Med-Light Lightning Rod I own is definetly a sturdy and fun stick to use.
