Shore Pickeral

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

:) Those pics were tremendous!

 It's been a while since I've seen water that smooth, I'd forgotten it existed, and the Pickerel, hopefully was sizzling merrily in a pan of some sort.

:) I kinda wonder where I can find Pickerel these days where I don't have to put 100+ clicks on the car. (The down-side of being in Kitchener)

:D Keep the pics coming!

Yes, we're shore fishing. We don't have a boat here, except for a one-person kayak. The only boat we have access to is the one at the cottage... no trailer.

The reason we picked Long Island Locks for shore fishing that night..... I wanted to go for a walk, Bowzog wanted to go fishing. This place involves both, as the parking lot is a little ways from the fishing spots. Maybe I forgot to mention to Bowzog that I wasn't planning on carrying anything on my walk   At least he carries the honkin' big tackle box. Didn't regret it, though, after catching that walleye.

Hi Slushpuppy, just checking in and thanks for the tip (Long Island Locks)I'm going to try this place, probably next week. Hope there's still one left for me below that dam. :!: Do you mind me asking what bait you were using when you caught that beautifull walleye?? :?: Have had good luck with minnows in the past but that's not allways easy when shore fishing. Talk soon!
Fishin-gal's finally got some fishin pal"s :D :D

mmm, if I remember correctly, it was a yellow gulp on black jighead. See the little muskie I caught (under the heading "My First Muskie Ever"), at the exact same spot, this time on a floating jointed rapala.

Is it worth my while to shore fish in the lower Rideau River along Strathcona Park ??? I'm close to Rideau and I'm looking for some close spots to hook a pike or something fairly large ! I've been to Victoria Island as well as a few other spots along the Ottawa River close to downtown and not much luck other then a few small pickeral and a few chases with the byes from the NCC... LOL
Is it worth a ride out Prince of Wales Dr along the Rideau where it meets the Jock ??

Any input would be helpful !!

Bottoms Up:

The rideau near Strathcona park is best fished with waders. Ive fished it a few times from shore, but found it pretty shallow. The rideau river and canal here in Ottawa is chock full of smallmouth bass. The best place I have fished in the city here is the park on the river on King Edward, close to where KE crosses over to Hull. There is some old bridge pilings there, and in the summers past, especially later on, I have had some amazing smallmouth fishing there. Right now these spots arent very useful since bass is closed. I cant hardly wait for the 26th.

I know that some people have good luck where the Jock meets the Rideau for pickerel and pike - but I think its pretty hard to find a good spot to fish pike without a boat. At least in my experience, pike seem to be more solitary - one here, one there - than bass or pickerel.
