First Loon

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

First Loon

Post by tman12 »

My Mom heard the first loon of the season yesterday on Otisco Lake. It sounded like it was going bonkers.

Did anyone see any up there yet, or hear one?

It's great to know they're coming back, and good fishing will be here too. :P

Loons

Post by Big Jim »

Hey Ty, cool when the loons go "LOONY"

We have a big swamp behind our house and my wife told that she heard the loons a couple of days ago for the first time this year.

They come to the swamp to breed and they make noise all night for about the next 6 weeks or so then there is babies all over the lake.
They stay until mid summer then they move on until next year when it starts all over...so i will get woken up lots in the next little while...but that is 8) 8) to have them so close.

We also have 8 giant Trumpeter Swans that come back every year since we have been living here...four pairs every year so I assume they are the same ones.

Take Care TT.

Pretty sure I saw one on Lake O yesterday. Lot's of ducks, geese and cormorants but this had the colours and profile of a loon.
Can't wait to hear them this year back at the cottage.

We took a short drive along our side of the lake today in search of the "loony loons" and found one. White caps made it tough to see much, but it was nice to spot one after a long winter without them.

I've nicknamed a loon "Chopin" that hangs out around our cottage shoreline at Wolfe; his wails are unusual and a little different than the others and after 2 summers of listening, I can pick him out by listening... and he wakes me up a lot. I don't mind so much! Last year he had a girlfriend, "Claire". The absolute coolest thing was to watch him one morning right off my dock in crystal clear, still water -- I was able to see him under the water, picking minnows out of the weeds like it was simple, and could check out the wild way he swam with his neck and feet pumping away. It was amazing!

So neat about your trumpeter swans. They probably get pretty territorial, don't they?!

Hope you're feeling OK these days Big Jim. Spring has sprung. :D

Hi Ty
Yep - they are back, but not in their full numbers yet.
Saw 2 on Charleston and heard 1 on Lower Beverley this weekend.

They don't waste time with the short season - will be paired up and building nests in the next couple of weeks....

I was in Kelowna last week and saw a couple on Okanagan Lake, I also saw a ton of quayle (sp) I had never seen one up until then...Was on silver lake over the weekend and did not see any sign of life....could be that I was the only living thing crazy enough to be out in those chilly conditions

We've heard a few spring peepers this past week, as well. Amazing little things: their bodies actually partially freeze over the course of hibernation...something we could never survive, and yet this little bugger does routinely.

A welcome sound of spring:
