Lakers from a canoe?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Lakers from a canoe?

Post by Theorem »

Hey guys,

Last year I tried (and failed) to go trout fishing in some of the backwoods lakes in the Calabogie area with info from helpful FH members and the MNR stocking lists. Spent a good many hours taking my poor car where no car should go only to get forced to turn around 75% of the way in each time. I think I'll save those lakes for when I own a truck! ;)

So, I've been reading through all the old posts I can and was really happy to find TONS of advice on lakes near Ottawa that have Lake Trout in them. I've never had a chance to try any of them (Been bass fishing mostly since moving to Ottawa), but I'm thinking of taking the wife out this weekend. She's really been bugging me to go the past few nights. Rough life, eh? :)

Does anyone have a suggestion for which of the frequently FH suggested lakes (Silver, muskrat, bark, big limestone, redhorse, loughborough, green, morrow, wabun, round etc etc) would be most fishable by a canoe? Up north we used to fish spring lakers in shallower waters so we had lots of luck trolling/jigging from canoes, but I knew the lakes well and I'm completely lost here. Any advice? Is it worth even trying? Or should I just buy a QC license and head into the smaller spec lakes? I'd hate to drive 2 hours to find out that the right structure is 5 hours of paddling away... hahah

I appreciate any advice you guys can give. :D

Schooner lakes are a bit rough in a canoe in my opinion and a little bit of a travel. Try Muskrat...But again could get rough in a canoe.

I was going to go up to Algonquin Park for the April 34th Opener, but it may still be iced in. Is Muskratt Lake a good bet for lakers?

Need any special gear at this time of year or are they all over the depth levels?

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions! I hadn't heard of Wabun, Schooner, or Shabomeka but I'll have to look into them. I just noticed them on the stocking lists too, might be worth investigating. Muskrat seems interesting too, though the maps I can find don't have a scale so it might be way bigger than I think haha. I really appreciate the help guys! Any other advice would still be very welcome though!

Is round schooner lake rough because of wind/waves? There seems to be some islands and structure there that I might be able to hide behind while still being in the approximate depth...

Thanks again! :D

Schooner lakes are pretty slow fishing these days...Have fished it many times in the last few years and nothing. The wind picks up good there for some reason too. I am not just saying this either...this lake is dying fast. Don't expect to catch much

Doh, that's sad to hear. Maybe I'll take schooner off my hopeful list for now. Thanks for the heads up. :(

Wow, that map site is pretty great! I've been using Angler's Atlas website mostly but it didn't have wabun lake or a few others. Thanks for sharing! :)

I agree

The schooners still get stocked and I've only fished them a couple times. Not a whole lot of action either times.
I'm pretty sure one or both have spiny water flea. Correct me if I'm wrong.
