A bit of info?????

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Post by Buck »

Hello all,

long time lurker but, with all the brouhaha re: lurkers, thought I might wanna start participating........... :? :? .

Got ourselves in a little jam here. Truck broke down right before our annual trip   . Anybody know of any options (excluding UHaul)??? All rental angencies seem to forbide hauling anything. Any rental agencies that would permit hauling a boat??

Anybody with a spare truck lying around anywhere?????

Not to come off as a smart-arse but what exactly do you mean by "spare" truck lying around?

Are you looking to buy one? Borrow one?

rent a truck

Post by Super »

Hi,
I had to rent a van just 2 years ago because we ran into the same problem as you.
I cannot remember the name of the place but the van came with a hitch and we were allowed to tow a boat.
The car rental agency was on Greber Avenue in Gatineau.
It is just a little bit south of Costco on the same side of Greber as Costco.
Maybe one of the Gatineau guys on this site will know the name of the place.
Or maybe my memory will kick in later.

I know that all rental companies (except Uhaul) forbid towing, but what they dont know wont hurt them. I rented a GMC envoy from avis (carling near kirkwood) last winter and noticed it had a recever but no hitch. the truck had the towing package from factory, so hypotheticly you could get the hitch for the recever and tow what you want as long as you disconect it before you return it. I dont see how they would know. I would have to assume that to do this you would have to be prepared to go around and be a walk in customer and ask what they have in stock. Ask to see any large SUV's or trucks on the lot and just see if they have a reciever, if so rent it. I would think if it has a recever it would be because most trucks (except base models) come standard with a towing package from the factory. They wouldn't cut the wire harness, (most likly tucked under the carpet) they need to resell that vehicle later.

On the other hand, you can also rent a pickup truck from Uhaul (although it will have "uhaul" written down the side). Not sure your thoughts on uhaul, safety wise, but they do rent more than just cube vans.

To Shore-finder.

Trust me, we try and play every angle available to us but, what would happen if we get into an accident while towing a boat when were not allowed?? A big what-if obviously but still.......... As for U-Haul, 50 cents per KM to Sudbury and back, plus gas, plus 20$ a day, kinda steep.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions but, we will stick around here.

If you are in an accident with a trailer attached they would obviously find out. Your right. I assume now you were planing on using the rental companies insurance....the extra $20 dollar a day thing. In that case your screwed, your right.

On the other hand if you inquire of your own insurance company you will find that you may be covered if you are in an accident with a rental vehicle. I rent a few vehicles a year and I asked my agent. I found out that it is included with alot of insurance policies. So if that is the case and...lets just say I rent a vehicle and tow a boat and get in an accident, I am covered by my insurance. I dont see how it would make a difference at that point, the rental place would still get paid.

Shore finder...Yes for an extra bit of $$$ you can add on an endorsement that allows you to have insurance on rental vehicles...With the Cooperators it is $40 for the year I think?? But if it will cover you for that I do not know as it states in the rules of the rental company no towing boats so we may not pay out. We usually do even for stupidity so we might. Now will we cover the boat...Not sure?? Good question for me to find out. I will talk to my underwriters and see what they say and let you know.
