Shore fishing spots in and around Ottawa?
Shore fishing spots in and around Ottawa?
Hi there,
I live in Centretown, Ottawa and wondering where is a good place to fish. I caught a couple of (very small) 6" bass from the Rideau River and was wondering if there were any around >1lb around.
I do not drive however, and have no access to a boat, waders or a floatation device so it would have to be from the shore. I can bike around a fair bit however or bus it so I can travel as long as its not too far! Does anyone know or have any advice for spots on the Ottawa River or Rideau River/Canal?
Many thanks!
Matt

Matt,
First off, welcome to Fish-Hawk.
With respect to your question, this is a topic that that has been commented on too many times to remember. If you use the 'Search' function for the board you will easily be able to find numerous suggestions for shore fishing spots.
Cheers,
Todd

Welcome to Fish Hawk - yes, there are lots of big bass in the Rideau and many pictures of them show up on this site! Try this link if you have not seen it already - it covers all the better shore fishing locations in and around the city:

Also, here is a link to an Ottawa Valley shore fishing guide that was started by one of the FH members.

Good luck!

This threat doesn't warrant a sticky, however I have moved a copy of the map into the Ontario Fishing Map Project forum.

Thats a great link, thanks! And there really is some great stuff in the search option.
I think I will go out this afternoon and try my SPro frog again - still haven't had a bite on it yet (with the exception of a bullfrog that chased it all around before swallowing most of it - luckly the hooks didn't set but he wouldn't let go, I bent down and grabbed the lure with my fingers and he just sat there and held it in his mouth with his hands)

Yeah, I kinda figured that... I've seen sites with 1000 sticky notes at the top, annoying... but there are always those questions that come up over and over and over and over again...Todd B. wrote:This threat doesn't warrant a sticky, however I have moved a copy of the map into the Ontario Fishing Map Project forum.
Figured I'd throw it out and see what bit.
Saw a HUGE one sunbathing, along with some kingfishers.Jamsers wrote:not to hijack the thread here, but........
Speaking of catching frogs.....
Ever hooked into a turtle?
Not fun! Don't recommend it!
Caught one tiny bass on a worm in 5 hours of fishing, nice and relaxing though. I might make a HELP ME thread in a bit, because I can't figure out why they are not attacking my surface frog, despite the fact I visited lots of places, many that looked ideal (lots of surface lily pads, lots of frogs)
If you live in Centretown, then Dow's Lake is always worth a try. Wave worms hook Texas have been my main method for bass, and just about any panfish bait will work for the pannies. Don't hesitate to try along the canal with worms, tubes or even top waters where the weeds are lower. Never had any luck with frogs in the weeds, but then again, I've not given them a really serious try, maybe because of the boat traffic.

From what I remember the original author removed the link from this forum due to concerns from members that due to the popularity of this forum in the capital region these spots may suffer.
I do not see any spot-burning policies for fish-hawk. I think in many circumstances shore spots are especially susceptible to overcrowding, overfishing and general destruction by people that do not respect these resources.
Are there any policies such as these? I have seen such policies on other sites, where members have the option to PM other members if they want to share such info.

Update - fished the rideau a few more times, caught a few bass around 6 - 9inches and then today hooked a MONSTER, it looked around 2 foot long to me, though it was almost certainly less. Anyway I wasn't able to tell what type it was, since the line snapped when I tried to pull it closer to net it... It was on a freeline worm hooked texas style fished about 20 foot from the shore in this little bay area, I was wondering if it could have been a pike since it was so big, do they eat worms? It shows there are big stuff in the rideau anyway!
