kipawa, fishing way back when, and now - report

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

kipawa, fishing way back when, and now - report

Post by scuro »

There is something about fishing for lakers and leadcore that I simply enjoy. This was my third trip to Lake Kipawa in Quebec...

Image
...and my second trip to Dorval Bay.

Image
This was our first family vacation there.

Image
My three girls.

Image
The girls still like to explore.

Image
We did a little outing down the lake, thanks Bob and Claire

Image
What's not to like?

Image
We were staying at what used to be the first fishing camp on the lake. They used to have fly-ins and went to Ogascanan lake.

Image
The family continues to live in the bay and the business had been in operation for a long time. Amie Dorval is over 80. We shared coffee and laughs with him in the morning. Even though I'm first generation Canadian, I was the GERMAN. As told by Amie, he was one of the first licensed guides in Quebec in 1947.

Image
Here he is with his son.

Image
They still have pics from the past, on top of the bar.

Image
Family catching fish way back when.

Image
Huge fish.

Image
The fishing is good but they are creating spawning beds to make sure it stays that way. Here is a barge loaded with fist sized chunks of gravel. As I was taking this pic I had a laker on. I got the full blast of the alarm from the boat when I lifted the laker.

Image
I'd take out whoever wanted to come. It was nice to share coffee with my wife on a beautiful morning. My daughter also came out a few times and Lulu loved to fish. This dog shook whenever a fish came on board and was growling when she determined that there wasn't enough action. She was constantly checking the lines and the water.

Image
All but one the fish were under the 50 cm slot limit.

Image
Lulu gave them all the business.

Image
She tried to bite the keeper.

Image
My keeper.

Image
Moments before it hit the BBQ

Image
Amie set up this rod for me. This setup is for bottom bouncing and the flashers are called a "Christmas tree" by locals. They use a 5 ounce weight and troll around 1.5 km in about 60 ft of water. They bottom bounce as one does for walleye. I was finding fish in 100ft of water and never used Amie's gear, I don't think it would have worked in such deep water. It sat by his table....would have tried it if there was more time.

Image
On the last day I did go out fishing with Bob who is his son in law. He tried out his own Christmas tree, but we got chased off the water by heavy rain. You wouldn't think it looking at this pic, but an hour later it poured. All in all, a very nice week.

kipawa visit

Post by Bud1 »

Very nice report. I will show it to Aime. The Pic of Aime, George shows Aime with his son (not brother) . The folks visiting on weekend caught quite a few Walleye right in the bay, as did Wayne.
Glad that you and family enjoyed visit.

Great to hear you had a good time... nice pics!!

I totally loved Kippiwa. I got skunked... but I still loved the lake.

I went by my self a couple of years ago for walleye and loved the place. Where I went wrong was with the outfitter I chose. The guy (and his wife) were SUPER nice people... I got along great with them... but they were drunk the whole time I was there. I never saw people drink like that and live. Quite literally they were on a 6 to 7 beer an hour pace. I am not exaggerating. From 10am to about 10 pm every day I was there.

Every outfitter I have been to alone (I do this relatively often) would take me out at least once to get me on the fish... not this guy. He had a horrible case of gout after the third day that I was there....

Oh well... I still got some nice shots of the area and had a great time with a couple of bear cubs breaking into my cabin while I slept...

Keep in mind that this was about the second week of October! Weather was amazing!

you sure that fish was 50cm from v of tail, lol! I was at kipawa for the first week of august, only one keeper the whole time. It was still beatiful and we caught a lot, just too small.

Looks like a really relaxing place - I can almost imagine myself spending a week there and not getting too P---d off for not catching a lot of keepers. (well..... almost!)

Thanks for the report.

Good old R.. and M...!
Very nice people, I sit in their booth at the Toronto show each year for a bit while Mary takes a smoke\bathroom break. Didn't see them there or in London this year though

I was not going to mention their names... didn't want to offend anyone. They were SOOOoo nice though.... it would be easier if they were a-holes... then you could slag the heck out of them! I just don't think much of them as outfitters based on the experience I had with them.

Perhaps it was the end of the season bender that they were on or something (But you need to train to drink like they did!!). I am not a snob or anything when it comes to that kind of thing. If someone wants to get pee pee-drunk or stoned out of their minds I will open the beer, mix the drink or roll the joint for t hem. I don't do drugs or alcohol... but I do live vicariously by watching others scramble their brains.

Well... I hope that they are OK... they are probably in Brazil or china getting his and hers matching livers.

Scuro,

I missed commenting on this fine report when you posted several weeks ago. I'm glad it got bumped up again to remind me to thank you. Not sure I know what to say with the comments about the outfitters though from previous posts...wow!

At any rate I, as always, enjoyed your story and report.

Tight Lines,

That fish was a very honest 51cm. Measured her several times and couldn't believe my good fortune. I had about a dozen 20 -30 cm range. Got tired of that so I thought I'd go 10 ft deeper and bang...the dog went crazy. Tried 10 ft deeper on the last two days but got scratch. Think I just got lucky.
