XXXL: It sounds like the rod was broken by misuse, albeit accidental. Warranty does not cover this. I seem to have a reputation for over the counter rod replacement, but there are some guys that have found me to refuse warranty, or at least tell them to send it back to Shimano when there is evidence of a non-fishing break.
Shimano is a great company to deal with and put a huge amount back into the industry and community, but they are still a company with shareholders to answer to. Even though you feel it wouldn't effect their bottom line, think about what you said. They replace it for you, they replace for everyone and it puts a huge dent in the bottom line.
Now, it may sound like I am trying to drive away business, but trust me, I'm not. I'm just trying to give you an honest answer from a different perspective.
Consider this example. Your car has a bumper to bumper warranty, and a rock goes through the windshield. You have to pay for the new windshield even though you had no responsibilty with it breaking.
I broke a Compre rod about 6 inches from the top. I sent it back to Shimano (I didn't go back to LB's because it had been over a year), but they were very quick to replace the rod and send it back to me.
Excellent service from an excellent company.
If you want the shipping address (and the box) PM me. I live in the Ottawa area.
