Rod/line guides breaking

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Rod/line guides breaking

Post by bullseye »

Just got back from a week of Pike fishing up near Maniwaki. Too much wind for the most part and not much biting. We took a few keepers in the 28 - 30 inch range and had a great day on Friday trolling whites.

I had a problem with my guides breaking. I use a moderate size spinning reel, 30lb power pro green braid on 6'6" medium heavy ugly stiks. The inserts in the guides are breaking out. Usually it's the tip but I also had the second and third ones from the end pop out as well. The first time it happened, I didn't notice right away and the tip guide cut the line. I have 30 pound fireline crystal on my other rod (identical setup) with no problems. BUT....I really like the power pro much better. Any suggestions on different rods or guide types??

Are you using a mono/fluro leader? If you are using a leader then the splice knot may be the problem.

I'm using a 12 inch steel leader. It never makes it into the guides. I think the Ugly Sticks guides just can't handle heavy braid consistently. They are good rods otherwise. I've just got to find something with better guides for my braided reels.

I've had 50lb powerpro on my BWS 1100 for the past 3 seasons and never had any issue with guides. Me thinks you have a defective rod.

My 7' Ugly Stik spinning rod had the tip insert come out on me this summer, I didn't think much of it though as its a 10 year old rod . . . it happened a few times (kept forgetting to glue it in place) but I run one spool of mono and one of fireline, happened with both on the reel . . .

In my case it might be time for a new rod, how long have you had yours?

Me Too

I just replaced the tip with another tip and the problem solved.
I have to say though I would not buy another Ugly Stick it is all tip. It does not bend much in the middle.

I prefer my South Bend Black Beauty any day.

Thanks
