Winchester / Chesterville area....

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Anyone care to induldge in a few spots to shore fish in the above towns....New to the area and looking to catch some action. Not too concerned with species...just some where I can go with my son to teach him how to fish....I can't seem to find many places that are shore fish-able....

City-it: Follow the Rideau. Any area with a lock or brigde should be a good place to start. Also, right in the village of Chesterville, people walleye fish right below the dam.

Hi, pretty sure that it's a sanctuary below the dam in Chesterville.....at least for part of the open season in the spring. There are other sanctuaries along the South Nation River as well. You can find out where in the regs.

I believe it is also illegal to fish for a certain distance downstream of any manmade structure. 75 meters rings a bell, but you should verify by checking the regs.

I'd like to know more about the not fishing downstream of manmade structures. Just checked the regs and didn't see anything about it. If it's true, I've been breaking the law for years.

You're right about the Nation having lots of sanctuaries though. For good reason too, considering some of the rare species found in it.

Anywhere on the river between winchester and berwick is a good spot to catch mudpout in the spring, I usually fish in between chesterville and berwick and catch tonnes of pout with the odd carp/sucker/mud puppy. Walleye and pike are caught below the dam for a few weeks in the early season, but it is a fish sanctuary for a portion of the early season, I forget what the time frame is but it is posted on signs around the dam in chesterville and down from the dam about a 1/4 mile. Do me a favour if your catching walleye on the dam, throw them back on the deep side, me and my buddies have been doing this for years and we are now starting to see a population on the deep side, even catching them ice fishing. I just looked up the time frame for the fishing sanctuary period and it's closed Mar 1 - friday before the second saturday in may.

Start around the bridge in between chesterville and berwick, lots of good shoreline to fish off of, there is not much suitable shoreline in between winchester and chesterville. There's nothing below the dam right now, walleye will be there in the spring

If you are near Osgoode, the launch at taylor park just west of the village or the kars boat ramp offers pretty good panfish for young ones. I have seen just about everything caught at Kars ramp- catfish, bass, walleye, muskie and all the panfish a dad could handle with 3 young kids -single hook, worm and boober-both have good access and parking.
have had no reports from Challis quarry for trout south of Chesterville this year- its a put and take shorline deal- depends on when they stock and how heavy the local take is.

The trout pond hasnt been stocked for a few years now, but there are lots of panfish in there now as well as the odd smallmouth people have deposited in there from the St.Lawrence.
