Sorry to hear that. Did you try to contact Shawmere Lodge about using their property to access the lake?
I think I'll wait till ice out to hit Red Horse.
DS
sure did and that was a big negative
WOW!!!! Not much business sense. I don't have a snow machine, but if I did I would not be offended by a "launching fee" just like for a boat.
Thay are sitting on the only lake around here with 365 trout fishing...if it was me I'd start with winterizing a cottage or two and see where trout packages got me.
Empty cottages make no money.
I was planning to call them about launching the boat from their lodge this spring.....starting to sound like it will be a run from Singleton insted.
DropShot'r i would just launch on singleton lake and boat to Redhorse, but im not too sure if the creek from lake to lake is even boatable, never been on it before. I have a bunch of maps of the area and none show charleston being connected to redhorse, i was told that you could boat from charleston to redhorse?????not sure
I've made the run many times....actually from Lyndhurst lake. Spent a lot of time camping at Wilson's Campground when the kids were younger.
From Lyndhurst lake it's all good EXCEPT where the Red Horse road bridge crosses the creek. Massive rock just under the water with bushels of boat motor parts and aluminum and fiberglass imbeded into the rock. I saw a bass boat that had the entire lower unit ripped off from that rock. The obvious choice would be to go to the left of the rock, which is the wrong choice. Stick to the right....it's a very tight squeeze between rock and shore but it can be done, at idle speed. After that its full bore all the way into and across Singleton. Coming out of Singleton it's a bit of a tight wiggle, then it's clear sailing down to the cabin on the piece of land that sticks out from the left....few rocks there as things bottleneck down briefly, then onto Red Horse.
I have a 17 1/2ft boat and have no problems making the run.
Given the choice I'd check with launching from Singleton Lake Campground first.
This is going back a while but the boat launch at Wilsons is steep with a pathetic attempt at putting down cement. The docks at Wilsons have to be seen. The 45 gal drums used to float the wood docks are paralell with the dock...making them less than stable.
There isn't any water access to RedHorse from Charleston. If you go to Larose bay you can hop on the portage that will bring you into Redhorse.
It's unfortunate that the lake is pretty private....but that's a good thing.
I used to spend all my summers and winters on Redhorse lake. My 2nd mom has a cottage Right beside the Shawmere, it's the one with the White Boat house. It's a really clean lake!!! Lots of bass in there! And couple lakers...if you know where to find them!!
If you're ice fishing for lakers...look for 60-80 feet, with a smelt on the bottom!
The way to access Redhorse from Charleston is via Donaldson's Bay. There is an old Indian portage on the southwest side of Donaldson's which runs for several hundred yards over into Redhorse. It is still used by avid canoers during the summer months; I have never used it during the winter.
As an adolescent 45-50 years ago; used to dive off the point to collect Indian pottery/relics.
