fish parts
I have actually seen people standing on the shores and wading knee deep in the mighty Napanee River during the fall salmon run. They were just collecting the fish that had already died, even those which had practically rotted!
Clearly, these people were not from this planet?
Though they looked humanoid, they carried on as such a flock of sea birds might at a cannery out on the coast. Even the strange noises they produced, in my opinion, was a form communication that signaled "More rotting salmon over here, "Hurry! Huryy!".
They demonstrated no hostility towards me as I encroached on their feeding grounds, yet I could feel their steely eyes undressing me in a most cold and primal way. Likely curious to my advanced angling gear, which to us was the standard rod and reel, and theirs being that of a rake and garbage bag. Understandably, its clear they were perplexed with such and watched with wonder as I caught still live and unrotted (mostly unrotted) Salmon.
Point being, fish is a staple food for many cultures, be it dead or alive. Here in Canada, we must prepare ourselves for the ever deepening culture pool and the effects it well have on our fresh water fish stocks.
As Dave Chong said, the fish for sale in the market are inland farm raised fish, which to the un-enlightened is a growing industry suffering huge restrictions and government fence sitting on promoting their development. These farms are a great solution in satisfying the foreign appetite. We need more.
Anyways, back to the seagull people, over the years I have seen less and less of them. They are either dying out, or they have simply mastered the art of fresh water angling and no longer have a taste for rotting, spawning fish.
Oooooppps! Maybe not spawning fish....if ya know what I mean....
And I think you do....

I disapointed to see one of my favorite freshwater fish raised simply to meet the taste of immigrants and foriegners. A largemouth bass's value is greater at the end of the line for sport than simply fillets. The real thing that annoys me is the foriegn fisherman keeping 5-8 inch bass, and as a result many of our local shorefishing destinations have declined in the ottawa area in recent years eg: hogs back, black rapids, manotick mill etc. These are simply my observations of fishing over last few years.
and the immigrants did all of this ?catfish25 wrote:I disapointed to see one of my favorite freshwater fish raised simply to meet the taste of immigrants and foriegners. If it is a farm raised bass then it's purpose in life is for food, having a readily available supply of farm raised fish, might decrease the demand on wild fish. How do you feel about farm raised trout, live trout are commonly available.catfish25 wrote:I disapointed to see one of my favorite freshwater fish raised simply to meet the taste of immigrants and foriegners. If you do not want people to keep small bass would you prefer people keep and eat the 5 pounders.

Wow way, to be to sensitive and politically correct. Your oppinion would drastically different if you had some of favorite fishing spots fished out and witnessed poaching by an indentifiable group. You are most likely boat fisher's or do not live in the ottawa area. Here an example I was fishing, and then some people rudely come start fishing right beside me and getting their lines crossed over mine, and then I witness them grab a turtle from the water and throw it in a sack to illegally keep and then they use a smallmouth bass on a stinger rig to catch a pike. Smallmouth bass are not allowed to be used a batfish, that is a violation of the law. To top it off they were parked in a fire route for 3 hours. This is simply a sample of what ive seen go on. Their is atleast a dozen more incidents I can name at the top of my head. So before start whinning and being politically correct you havent had the same experiences I had and therefore you are unfit to judge me contrary to what you may think.

Easy guys. As primarily catch and release fishermen who fish the sport of it, this is indeed a very sensitive topic to be discussing. Please let's just keep the discussion clean without sterotyping, as much as many of us most likely want to from things we've seen.
I'm watching this one and will have to cut it off if emotions get out of hand.
Thanks.

political discresion
Ah, site admin, you wield a god like power that no mortal will ever understand.
However, it is a good point for discussion and we have all seen the supposed damage that ignorance, greed, or disrespect causes on our shore lines and water ways.
But what of political correctness? That notion is better armored then a flax jacket on bomb day. If only I could hide behind the same standards to make my case without some thin skin calling foul and many spineless hide behinds shouting damage control, children are reading this.
We have all seen, and when I say all, that means most, which is a substantial number given that FH members make up about 1% of the angling community Ontario wide, so exponentially the numbers grows in expanse of thousands, of people who have seen mother nature violated in unholy ways.
But what's worse? Turning a blind eye to the obvious, as it seemingly always appears to be one particular culture, or do we just pretend it never happened because were scared of someone pointing a finger at you and and start blowing a foul whistle?
Its happening people, we know who, where, and when.
Suggestion, use what we have, buy a camcorder, fire up you tube, make a basic documentary and see what happens. Make this situation a "not going away" topic and allow the masses to decide.
Regardless, I see no cure for this growing issue. Alas, we may have all fed the proverbial suicide pill, that tasted a lot like political correctness to mother nature.
Really, its not "their" fault.
Its ours for not doing something about it sooner.
