Black fly question

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Black fly question

Post by skeller001 »

I am heading to QC this Sunday. I have only been to the area in July, never June. How bad will the black flies be, what will I need to do to be prepared for them, and is it better while out on the water fishing? Thanks for any replies!

They'll be bad but nothing you can't handle! And it's always better on the water, especially if there's a breeze.

I was a couple hours north of Ottawa on the Quebec side this past weekend and didn't see one black fly and only a couple of mosquito's. We were camping and sat out by the fire until about 10pm with no bug spray. I think the heat wave a few weeks back killed them all in that area (well that's my theory anyway). The only things biting were the tiny "noseeims", but they weren't bad either.

Out on the water with a little breeze you will have no worries for sure. Just bring some bug spray with Deet just in case and you should be fine. Where abouts are you headed?

What a coincidence, I'll be heading there in August with a bunch of friends for the first time!

Let me know how the fishing goes! Good luck!

I was 4wheeling up near St-Michel des Saints and we couldnt even stop because of the bugs. Our smoke and drink breaks were done while rolling! We had deep woods on, even if they werent biting much they were getting in our eyes, ears, nose and mouth non stop.

I was there (10 minutes from there, actually, on a secluded lake) last Thursday. I fished from 7am till noon. Cloudy skies, no breeze, roughly 15 degrees out. NOT ONE SINGLE Black fly. I had no repellent on, either.

Good luck on Lac Heney. Have fun!

Thanks everyone!!!

I hope to have a nice trip with my son. We will be looking for pike early in the week then pike and bass later in the week. I have never been any good at walleye so we will stick with bass and pike.
