Daner and The Bay of Quinty Report

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Daner and The Bay of Quinty Report

Post by Daner »

There has been a suggestion or two to re post this report on the generic fishing site. So please don't think I am too aggressive.

Hi Guys;
I did take many photos but as most of you know only so many can be posted.
So, if you want more info, don't hesitate to pm me.
The purpose of this trip besides bonding with the boy, was to catch some Pickerel, tour the area and have Alex catch his 1st Pike ever.

Alex and I left Aylmer on Friday, August 13th for The Bay of Quinty. We arrived at Perfect Vue Resort on a calm, hot and humid afternoon.
The resort is set on the north shore of Hay Bay just east of Shermans's Point.
The day was spent setting up camp and swimming in the heated pool.
We were too tired to go fishing.

The next morning we set out for Ram Island but had to return early as a south east wind swept through and created a very bumpy and high wave boating experience.
That would be the tone for the next 4 days with thunder storms thrown in as an encore! Quite a lighting show!
This was a damper for the little boy as he refused to go out until things calmed down.
As you can see I have a 14' Sylvan Deep hull wih a 15hp Johnson. I am thinking now to buy a bigger boat.

The time spent away from fishing was a visit to CFB Trenton where the museum houses many full scale planes and smaller model planes and a full array of information on all the world wars. Well worth the drive. The other visit was to Hell Hole north of Napanee. This is 3.2 km walk through the valley of the Salmon river which was carved out by the glaciers. Quite a tour!!! Alex actually had the guts to climb into a 26 foot hole very thinned out. There is an array of deep gullies and beautiful scenes to explore.

Fishing was tough with the weather but I managed to get quite a few jumbo Perch, lots of Silver Bass and Smallies.

We did finally get a break on Wednesday, where again I was in the boat alone. This time however, I did net 2 Pickerel. They were not big but hey, 2 lb Pickerel and eating size.
By this time Alex was getting pretty edgy and wanted to go home.
I kept up the "Big surprise" and the hunt for the 1st Pike and with a call to his mom, he agreed to a few more days!
That evening we drove to Toronto to the Molson Amphitheater to see Green Day perform - The Big Surprise!.
For those of you who do not know of Green Day, they have been a rock force for 26 years.
They have many, many hits songs on the radio and within the last few years have matured into a major performing rock act. While at the show we sat with heavy metal ledgeons "ANVIL" and their family members"
Our tickets were 4th row dead center. They performed a 3 hour rock and light show that would, DID blow the best acts away!!!!
The photos and links are just borrowed from others. I did not take any myself!!!

Thursday bought another good day and Alex agreed to fish with me. We ventured out of Hay Bay into Mallory Bay where we stopped on a point with a weed bed.
I gave him a large red and black buck-tail single blade spinner to use. After his 3rd cast, bang he had a fish on.
As I went to net the fish, it jump out of the water and to my amazement it landed it the net.
Yes, an 8.3 lb Pike!!!! He was using 10 lb test with a spin caster and a light duty Ugly Stick.
The rest of the evening was spent spent catching perch, Silver Bass and nothing else.

On Friday, I ventured out in the evening with a neighbor as Alex was now satisfied catching his Pike.
My turn to catch the big one. As on many occasions, my patience is a must.
Just before dark I had a hit and landed after 15 minutes on a light duty Ugly Stick with 10 lb test a 14.8 lb Drum!!!

Knowing we were leaving on Saturday, I awoke very early to go out and get some more Pickerel
as I had captured a few minnows in my minnow trap. My intent was to still fish Sherman's Point.
As I was ready to leave I felt the rain drops. Clouds were forming very quickly and I had to make a judgment call.
Better to pack up dry and drive tandem while the good weather prevailed.

Tackle used although there are many options and I did use a few, is as follows:
The red and black buck-tail spinner was used for the Pike.
Both the double June Bug and Victor Spinners were used with a 2 foot Floro leader with a 1/4 ounce sinker with a worm.
And last, still fishing with a sinker, leader, hook and worm.

Location: Sherman's Point, Mallory Bay, Thompson's Point, Ram Island and Hay Bay weed beds.

All in all, a good trip, bad weather, got to know the kid better, caught fish and I would definitely return, but earlier in the season.

I would like to thank the following sponsors:
Craig for the show and tell for my photos!
The fish for taking the challenge!
The worms for their lives!
Perfect Vue for their hospitality!
Wally for his advise!
And last, our members who have read this report!!!

P.s. I would really like to find a good Pickerel lake in my area!!!???

Ya that long. The thing is, I never realized how good they were until last year when I decided to introduce my son to rock music. I now know who they are.
They are so good!

Way to go- fishing with your son and doing some other things.

Introducing him to R n R is good, I took my son many years ago to KISS and he still talks about it 30 years later.

Fishing is also a great idea - concentrates on real life, not reality shows or PC games.

Cheers and good fishing with your son.

Nice outing!
Question. Are you allowed to pull tandem trailers like that? (boat trailer connected to pop-up trailer). Pretty sure that's not allowed unless you've got a 5th wheel.

I've seen it done on the backroads, but not on a highway haul from Alylmer to Quinte.

No you are not allowed to do that....only one towing trailer per car. It was legal many years ago but with more people buying boats trailers etc and not knowing how to back up and drive they made the change to one towing trailer only. Have you ever tried to back up two trailers....pretty fun to do
Fishing isn't a matter of life and death....
It's much more important.

It is VERY illegal to tow 2 trailers with a car or SUV.....it is LEGAL if you have a truck or motorhome!! Mr. Daner is a lucky man that he didn't get pulled over by the OPP and given a fine as well as having no choice but to leave his boat and trailer parked on the side of the road!!!! 8)

Towing More Than One Vehicle
Cars, passenger vans and SUVs are not permitted to tow more than one trailer or one vehicle. Motor homes, trucks, pickup trucks and truck campers are legally permitted to tow two trailers or a trailer and a motor vehicle behind a trailer. However, a three vehicle combination that is swaying excessively, is unstable or has reduced handling capabilities is subject to action by the police as an unsafe combination of vehicles under the Highway Traffic Act.

The maximum length of any combination of vehicles is 23 m (75' 6").

Interestingly I could find no mention of this on the SAAQ site.

So maybe here it is still ok. Not sure.

In Quebec you are allowed. 63' or so.
Traveling across Canada you are also allowed if your plates are from a province that allows such. However, if the Police want to check and find that it is an issue, then of course you will be told to unhook!

Hey Daner.
Actually I found out it's not ok in Quebec either.
http://www2.publicationsduquebec.gouv.q ... 2R1_02.htm

Has to be a 5th wheel to double up. I was seeing if I could do this as well.
Just looking out for you buddy.
Don't want to see you get in any more trouble.
