Ottawa River (wendover) Crappie Outing

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Ottawa River (wendover) Crappie Outing

Post by Hollywood »

Well, being blessed with two children, a girl and a boy, I am a lucky man. However, their birthday's are 4 days apart. My daughter, Emma, turned 8 on the 20th, and Owyn turns 4 on the 24th. Today was the double birthday party..... So as the first part of the day was going to see our house filled with 8 little princesses, I said do Owyn "wanna go fishing with uncle Gil?" His eyes lit up and off we went with the walleye hunter and the gang onto the Ottawa for crappies.

We arrived on the scene and set up. I had never targeted crappie before, I am not even sure I ever even accidentally caught one. Shortly after we had our lines wet, walleye hunter started laying out paramiters for a bet as to who would get the first fish of the day as he was sure it would be him. "Oh yeah?" said his brother, Ken....

It's a good thing Gil never finished what he was saying! Anwyay, first stirke went to Ken and the rest of the day went well with all of us catching some. I caught my first

and walleye hunter did his part.

Owyn spent time between my heated ice tent and playing with minnows, cleaning holes and talking to the boys. You know, teaching them how to jig.

Sadly, I had to pack up and leave at 3 for birthday party part 2 (Owyn's turn). When I left, we had close to 20 crappie on the ice. Walleye hunter called me with the after report as they were moving down the bay for walleye as I was leaving. After I left, they caught another nice pike in the new spot followed by 4 good walleye around 2 lbs each and two misses! All in all, a nice day for the 8 of us in the gang who were on the ice for the afternoon. The fish fry is planned.... I will post a pick of the heaps of fish walleye hunter (who is a miracle man with food, especially fish) cooks up when our two families get together to chow down!

Had to say this especially when it comes to my older brother!!! no competition at all between us hey hey??? too funnny, love him to death....
He's a top notch angler!
Cheers...

hahahah, I must have missed that "fist one"! As I assume since Denis was staning right beside you, he will back you up and I stand corrected haha. Anyway, it was a great time!

and, Craig, sorry, I have to admit.... we did have a flasher kicking around. If you look close, you can see Gil's hooked up to the battery on his 4 wheeler and Ken's is in the hole (you can see the float in his pic) I guess it was new school??

I forgot to mention too that they weren't suspended at all like we thought they would be, they were sitting in the weed bed and we were getting them a foot off bottom in about 23 feet of water!

Crappies and kids go together like bacon and eggs! I know how close I feel to my kids when we share time together outdoors.

Good job on the Ottawa River!

Flasher saves the day again. I had the same the thing happen to me at Crappie Bay. The flasher turned what could have been a mediocre day, into an epic day of crappie fishing.

I can vouch for Gil being a good cook. !!!I can remember the 4" steaks in Quinte The orders went from Rare to well done, all the steaks(roasts) went on at the same time and all were served at the same time and we all had them like what we wanted.
When hell freezes over, I'll be there icefishing!!!

If you can't stand behind our troops,
Please feel free to stand in front of them!!!
