place to take the kids ice fishing?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

place to take the kids ice fishing?

Post by CRP_4321 »

I haven't been ice fishing in years but thought I would introduce my son to it and maybe make it a regular thing.

I'm looking for a spot to fish for crappie and perch that is accessible by walking since I don't have a skidoo. I live in Richmond and don't mind traveling a little.

I have the following equipment;
- big chisel
- large spoon/ladle
- few tip-ups and a spider man rod
- lawn chairs
- worms(lure suggestions?)

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,
Chris

my suggestion would be petrie island off trim road in orleans (Crappie Bay) lots of panfish there for the kids to catch use small jigs tipped with small minnows or gulp fish fry's. Worm will work, maggots, gulp maggots
its about a 50 yard walk from the parking lot.

you can pm me for more info if need be !..................DANO

As part of the Winterlude festivities they usually do a kids icefishing pond on the Ottawa River at Jacques Cartier Parc in Gatineau. It's free and stocked with over 5000 trout of various sizes and kids get to keep their catch. They supply the rods and they'll even fillet them up for you. Great way to introduce your kids to the sport.

Thanks Dano and bucketmouth!

I'll check out Petrie island for sure and the Winterlude sounds like a great social event my son can enjoy.

You could also try Shirley's bay off Carling ave if you don't want to travel to the other end of the city.

My vote would be below the long island locks. There's always perch there for the kids to play with and it's a short walk....

Constance Lake off the Dunrobin Road. You can drive unto the lake now, and you should be able to get the kids into some small perch, and if you are using minnows, some hammer handle sized pike; with chance of picking up a bigger one if you are lucky. Biggest I've seen was about a 7 pounder.
Stop off at Bits and Baits in Stittsville on your way and get some minnows, and I'm sure Gord can give you some info on the lake.

Thanks again everyone!

I'll be sure to take him to a couple of these spots over the next weeks.
