Mississippi Lake Musky rumor

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Mississippi Lake Musky rumor

Post by Jimmy_1 »

Not sure how valid this is or what....

BUT

Anyone else heard this? Apparently a musky was caught or seen in the lake and the MNR have been trying to find it.

I personally can't see how it would have ended up in the lake as the obstructions, dams etc from the Ottawa River to the lake are NUMEROUS.

Heard the rumour at the Carp show that some guy caught three through the ice....I think some guy doesn't know what a washed out pike looks like.

MNR guy was asked that weekend about it, he had heard the rumour, but like you he couldn't see how it could get there unless it was dropped off.

I hadn't heard about 3 through the ice.

Why anyone would want to drop them in there is beyond me.

I've heard it too. I chalked it up to mis-identification.

Agreed.

I will not be tossing Suicks or Topraiders into Miss lake anytime soon.

There might be dams but I have read of fish making there through things that where thought impossible before. But I agree with all the previous statements.

This might be a little far fetched but in my past experience fishing Big Gull and Crotch Lake, I did catch what was a Blue Pike!
It had the look of a Muskie (fierce) and had a very silver/blueish colour to it.
Perhaps this strain has moved from the Lanark water system to the Mississippi/Carleton?

Not far fetched at all Daner. You nailed it would be my guess. I just spent the last 7 months on the shore of the Miss and talked to a local who grew up there. He has caught those blue/silver Pike himself so they are in that lake.

Saw a muskie in there as a kid. But that would be like 13 years ago. There is northern pike but they quite small and its hard to break the 30 inch mark. If there is some large pike in there my guess would to to try the deeper section of the lake along weed lines on a over cast day that also happens to have a full moon or new moon with a floating rapala with a split shot one and a half feet up on a heavy duty fluro-carbon leader attached to 10 pound braid on a nine foot medium action rod (also don't forget to use a rapala knot and the leader should be 4 feet long with a splicing knot and the rapala would ideally be 3.5 inch sliver or perch pattern). If it is not or overcast or in the evening fishing for pike is usually slow based on my past experience. If your looking for Muskie near Ottawa Moonies bay has them, hogs back, bronson bridge, billings bridge, Jock river ( I saw a 47 Incher in here in early may in a foot of water when one of my crappie lures got caught on the bottom and I waded out to get it I spooked it). ;)
