New World Record Musky

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

I agree. I must say, I have more admiration for someone who would release a fish of potentially world record proportions, than I would for someone who would harvest such a magnificent catch just so they can get their name on an official list somewhere.

Put two guys at the front of the room, one who holds the world record and has photos of the fish on the scale to prove it and another who has release photos of a fish equally as impressive and I'm almost certainly going to spend more time talking to the latter. I hate to generalize, but I suspect the discussion would be far more interesting.

I have some questions. A fish that big must be pretty old. Is it on its last legs and soon to die? Is a fish that old still involved in spawning? I kind of doubt it but not sure.
What would a world record Musky be worth to the angler, either from tackle manufacturers or perhaps some place like Bass Pro or Cabelas. Just wondering.

My bet is not much unless the fella really persued it by doing appearances and the like. No one is going to cut you a check just because you broke that record. That record will be broken in the next 5 years is my bet. It would be nice to see the constant battle over what the REAL record is and put all that to bed once and for all.

That is an old fish but maybe not as old as we all may think. Genetics play a bigger part in sheer size of fish than age. Not every fish will attain that size even if it lived to 100 if that makes more sense.

Kudos to the angler for thinking this thru. Dale still gets a raw deal (some deserved at times, most not) for his fish. Dale and Julie have put two more Giants in their boat since then so that was no fluke. Put your time in on the Larry and you win the Musky lottery every now and then.

Like RJ said, probably not worth all that much, though It could certainly get you all kinds of sponsors, some free baits, some speaking engagements etc... If you you pimped yourself out with autographed pictures

Again genetics play a big role in maximum size, length of growing seasons, how good of a predator that fish is(calories in/out). Just because a fish is big doesn't automatically equate to old. O'briens fish was aged at 30, Williamsons at 17.

Also a myth that big old fish dont reproduce. They don't hit menopause. They they may not be as fecund as a younger model, but they still spawn. I would argue that even though they are no longer in their prime, there eggs are extremely important to the fishery....because they have the genetics to grow large!

As a muskie angler, I would really appreciate if someone caught, killed, and obtained a certified, bullet proof record of a fish 65.1 pounds or bigger. This would finally put an end to the debate of what our world record is.

"According to Dr. John Casselman, a ministry of Natural Resources researcher, the next world record will likely come from one of the seven Ontario waters that have the breeding lines and the environments needed to produce monsters. These are: the St. Lawrence River; Lake of the Woods; Wabigoon Lake; Eagle Lake; Lac Seul; Georgian Bay; and the Ottawa River"

Just wondering why Lake St. Clair isn't on that list. From all the reports I've seen over the years that lake is full of large Muskie.

Thanks for the replies.
No need for the sarcasm.

I didn't realize in order to verify a record you had to kill a fish.
I assumed (albeit) incorrectly that you could film taking measurements etc and that would suffice.
I there are 1-2 others on the boat I am sure that would be a "witness" no?

Myself personally would put it back. I don't like killing any fish and seldom keep any for the table.

if someone really catches one greater than 65lbs, i hope its kept.

it'll end the bullsh*t that surrounds the world record muskie crap.

if you look at the williamson fish, the mount, it doesn't even look that big, and its mis-proportioned...fins are in wrong places....

if you look at any of the "big" fish from back in the day (not obriens), then compare them to recent fish, i swear the record has been already been beaten....

but until you keep it, its not recognized.

Clair doesn't have the right forage base, or pedigree. There is some large muskies in there, but we are looking for HUGE!!

I know that paper came from the authority on Muskies (Casselman),but I would wager that any record would actually come from The Larry, or GBay. Seul being my third choice. Every year without fail, they produce the world biggest muskies.

Like this one from last year. Weighed in the boat on certified scales at 58lbs, then released. Any body that knows muskies, knows these two guys are no strangers to gigantic fish. Ignore the world record stuff on the image...

Same guys, in one of the most iconic muskie images ever

smitty 55. here on st clair. the largest documented musky was 48.4lbs. tony jaro caught it. we do have some fish getting larger every year. I have seen fish over 56 inches.forage base is the key. although st cl. fish are the same strain as Georgian bay and the st lawerence.
as for all the record talk this certainly has been a hot topic. hopefully the fellow that caught the fish weathers the sh%storm created by others..
my biggest question is how do you have a record if theres no carcass???

All of this because someone was desperate for some more likes for his Facebook page.

I sure hope the lucky angler doesn't get lambasted because of it and we can all get to see such of rare fish.

Congrats to Ross, Peter or Larry or whomever it is that caught the fish.
Catch and release them all

This isn't referring to the fish Dale and Julie just caught. It's referring to a fish caught back in Sept by a MC member.

Dale is still at it so who knows what may surface for him in the next week. I got the invite to join him but I'll be standing on ice instead of in the boat next week...
