Best Fall Musky braid...

I was out yesterday with two true gents from musky Canada. We tempted our chances against the fish of ten thousand casts... The action was slow but it was a great learning experience for me.

We started fishing at 9:30. The outside temperature was about -4 celcius. The weather was announcing winds up to 20km/h but we never experienced that. The chill factor was probably rough as we all know that Ottawa weather is bone chilling humid.

I myself was using a shimano corvalus with a 8 foot 6 daiwa rod and 65lb Berkley fireline braid...

Avidangler was using a 7 foot one piece a shimano Cardiff reel and 65lbs suffix 832...

Third gent was using a 7 foot one piece an abu ambassadeur reel with 65lb power pro...

After about 45 minutes of fishing, the results were pretty clear as to which braid was the best....

Suffix had relatively no issues.

Powerpro needed to have its eyelet cleaned every 10-15 minutes.

And the Berkley fireline (mine) was frayed beyond usage...I had to clean my eyelets every 7-8 minutes. Powerpro gent, told me to watch out for the ice, just when I started looking I noticed a really heavy fray on my line, 15 yards in, so I cut it and retied...about a douzen casts later, I watched my shallow raider fly off unattached as my line broke ten yards in.....

By the way, my braid was bran new from September...I changed it for the fall...

At this point I was chilly and was really unhappy with my gear....

Conveniently, mother nature kicked it, and it warmed up...so instead of fishing in cold, we fished in snow until 3pm when it started to chill down again.

What experience have you guys had with braid late in the fall? My next pick will be suffix 832 or power pro super 8 slick?

Info from personal experience will be much appreciated.

I have no problems with powerpro been using it forever, but I use 80 # test minimum.

One trick to keep the ice off in the fall is a silicone spray on your eyelets, I was out Saturday and there was some ice on my line but it can easily be taken care of by letting some line out or in.

My season is done but I will not forget the silicone idea. I might also try power pros slick 8 next time around...And yes, I might also try 80lbs test.

I've been using Power Pro forever with no issues. I'd say give your guides a looksie, you may have a cracked guide giving you this issue.
