white lake report

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

white lake report

Post by toddc »

went to white lake for the afternoon, didnt have alot of hope in catching much but the kids wanted to go.. checked the topo and chose a spot that I thought should produce. We got into some jumbo perch in the afternoon and ended up with about 10 or so. Then just at about 430 I got a 3.5lb walleye, missed 2 more, then landed a 5 lber, and missed a coupl more solid hits. The bite was lite and the where hitting small chartruse jig with small minnow. They wouldnt touch any of the larger offerings. pictures to come. The perch came out of 30 ft and the walleye came out of 21-17ft. Hope this helps.

Just to remind readers that there is a new zone wide regulation on keeping walleye. Only between 40 to 50 cm (15.7" to 19.7")

Thanks Bobfly.
I guess that means that you need to transport the fish whole or gutted, and then fillet it at home. Or throw it right in the fry pan on the ice... or release it. :)

If you cook it on site, you better remove all evidence.

That's kinda old news. It's the same as last year. If your not checking the regs at the start of each year your likely gonna get yourself in trouble. Jon

Bobfly.... what evidence? You're allowed to fillet a legal fish and consume it without transporting it. Its in the regs.

I had not thought about this clearly before making my comment. If you have pieces of a walleye around when a CO happens to come by (which is unlikely), how do you prove that it was in the slot? I guess one should keep the carcass as a whole with fillets removed until the time you leave then dispose of it.

Yes, this is old news but you would be surprised at how many people don't know of the new slot limit and that it refers to the whole region. Not a big deal for me. I almost always release my fish. We don't have enough fish around here to keep other than panfish. Go buy it at the store.

How is the snow covering on it? Is the snow blowing off or is it accummulating in the travelled area? Or better yet, is someone plowing.
I am thinking of heading out with my kids and tow a converted tent trailer with my quad and don't want to get too stuck.

Can you get on the ice at White Lake Marina or do I have to head to Cedar Cove?

Regarding Pickerel Bay access I was recently told by a good bud of mine that there is no legal parking on the road itself in the winter and the marina is of course private and has been closed for a while now for public access. Initially the new owner allowed access for a couple of years after originally purchasing the business, but after getting the property torn up by guys dragging their shacks off he shut it down.
CC I'm not saying guys aren't accessing the lake there anyway, but Cedar Cove would be a safer bet and with good conditions Pickerel Bay ain't that far away by quad. Or if conditions are bad you could even rent a shack from cedar cove and still be able to get the kids out. Even pizza delivery from the restaurant lol.

Good luck getting out with the young ones. It's a rewarding experience.
FYI cell phone coverage used to be crap out there. Not sure these days. Just so you can warn wifey hehe.

Cheers

You can get on at the White lake marina and also the Waba cottage museum. Smitty is correct about pickerel bay lodge, no access there. Not sure where you coming from but you can also get on at Sunset bay (off hwy 511). Jon
