white lake report

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

I do agree that walleye are being overharvested, but not bass. I also think that the spawning grounds for pike have been ruined which explains that most lakes in eastern Ontario are mainly home to hammerhandles when they once held huge pike. Try getting a permit to remove a beaver dam, it takes months, and when you do it's too little too late. I think they should extend the slot size for walleye that goes from opening-june 15th on the Ottawa river to jan 1-mar 31 as all of the hut cities kill more walleye than could ever be kept in the summer

OK. You guys have had your fun. Am I going to get kicked off FishHawk for expressing my opinion. Not likely. You need people like me to keep a conservation perspective front and center.

Am I going to get kicked off the Advisory Panel. Not likely. I'm one of the few who attends almost every meeting (any red faces listening??)

I like to eat fish as much as the next guy, especially fresh and caught by myself. And yes, we do have a Put and Take trout fishery but it was originally called a Put, Grow and Take Fishery. The "Grow" part is gone for the most part. That is all I am concerned about if you read my posts carefully. BTW, there is no Put and Take walleye fishing at White Lake. They haven't stocked Walleye anywhere recently as far as I know. The reports I've heard about White Lake is that the fishing has been terrible the past number of years. The likely cause is warming water and over harvesting.

I think it is pretty clear that with few exceptions the fishing has declined significantly within a two hour radius of Ottawa. That is what is behind my comments about buying your fish. No-one I know is catching very many second year or older trout in our district, certainly not like you could as recently as three years ago. I don't think you should have to have a quad, snowmobile or only ice fish to catch fish. BTW. ice fishing is banned in other jurisdictions near high population areas.

When the Council was discussing Bass, it was generally thought by staff that there wasn't very much harvest and so it was decided not to tinker with that aspect against the protest of some of us, even Lodge Owners, that we instigate Catch and Release because, in our opinion, they were being harvested at too high a rate. There were similar protests for Lake Trout and Walleye. OMNR, like most civil services, doesn't like radical change even though it is called for.

We had a presentation from the highly respected Dr Casselman who on a side comment insisted that we encourage people to keep and eat fish but he put a caveat on that....."when sustainable". Since research is not likely to happen on this we are left with our own versions of sustainability. My opinion is that when in doubt, release. But make sure you learn how to do it properly.

Yes, occasionally I use two rods, one with a dry fly and the other a wet. If I get any action on the dry, I will bring my wet line in because dry fly fishing is the ultimate, IMO. No harm is done to the fishery because I release my fish, especially trout. They are too few and valuable to take. When I pay to go fishing, i will take fish home for sure. If you readers are going to use this as a basis for me being unethical to be a member of Fishhawk or the Council, I can't really help you, no-one can.

you know what.. Im going to say my piece... If bobfly can , then I can. You know what burns my butt? self rightoues A...holes. Everytime you post something there is always someone trying to school you on fishing ethics or safety or whatever.. I dont need your opinion, believe it or not I have actaully made through life this far with out your two cents. Mind your business, look after your own conscience and I will care for mine. We all know the law. Im an avid bowhunter, but I dont slam rifle hunters, Its there choice . If you think the fish depleation has anything to do with fisherman taking home there catch especially on back lakes then your information is antiquated and I suggest you do your homework and open your own post on the subject instead of jacking mine. That way if someone wants to hear you rant then they can to your post.

ok Im done
sorry

Well said Todd. :greetings-clappingyellow: No need to be sorry at all man. It's your thread. Besides, he had it coming as he keeps buying himself further into the muck.

Truly delusional to believe that we need you, and using two rods is OK because you catch and release.
You really are the epitome of arrogance.

The huts on cedar cove are now too far out in deep(ish) water... to catch fish you need to move in to shallower water.
Try areas that you knew held weed beds, and also any rocky points (look at the shore line).

The fish are still there but you might have to move out of your safety zone!

What an INTERESTING thread!

I forget if it was bobfly last winter who had some jackass opinion about something for which he was CLEARLY the expert because, by golly, he was on the FMZ Advisory Council, wanted me to read a bunch of reports that he had read, digested and regurgitated as gospel. But maybe that was some other self-righteous son of a female dog, I do not recall. Hello! Let's all admit to breaking the law but it doesn't apply to us because we are a C&R participant. Sure thing, have another toke. Move along folks, nothing wrong here............

Guys, "which" White lake are you talking about? I am guessing it must be the one east of Calabogie? (There are several...) Maybe I missed this in the midst of all of the brouhaha.............

Just a word of caution to anyone out ice fishing. This applies to any popular lake I would figure. Just because the MNR is short staffed doesn't mean that they're not out there checking on fishermen. As I was told, just last weekend they were on White Lake and apparently made some real good money laying out a fair number of fines, the cheapest one being $200. One guy was nailed for having a Pickerel 1/4" over the slot size, at least one other for too many lines and several others for other offenses including booze. So if your fish is close to the slot size limit, you better be real sure of your measurements. And at least hide your beer. Even in a shack it's still a bit of a grey area. Be careful.
